I am going nuts about this. I hope someone can help me.

Im have PS3 hooked up to a onkyo 605 with a HDMI 1.3 cable. I have changed the audio settings on the PS3 some many times. I think I tried every possible combination there is. bitstrem , pcm, all the 7.1 on , all the 7.1 off, some on some off ....... bla bla bla . I still cant get it to pay a BluRay in 7.1(Shoot em Up is a 7.1 disk) I can only get it to play in 5.1. I know that it is a very easy fix but i cant seem to get it to work. any help would be grate.
Thank you
Danny

I assume you have the latest PS3 firmware - I think version 2.30 was the first to support DTS-HD.

You might want to try a later New Line disc that doesn't have the 7.1 authoring problems that early New Line HDM discs had. Most will suggest El Orfanto (The Orphanage). You can also try one of the Lionsgate (3:10 to Yuma) or music discs that has 7.1.

I still have not had any luck getting this to work right.
1 used a new movie "3:10 to Yuma".
2 set all the ps3 output settings to ON
Now here is the problem--- By setting all the output settings to ON the Onkyo seems to lock the listening mode to only MULTI CH OR DIRECT. Even if I'm watching a regular movie or just playing a game. If I play 3:10 to Yuma with my settings this way the display reads 7.1 but to tell you the truth it sounds like sh*t. I cant change the listening mode I can only get MULTI CH or DIRECT.
If I turn OFF the 7.1 output settings on the PS3 I can then change the listening mode and get much better sound but then cant get 7.1 to play. I know that i must be doing something wrong. i just don't know what.
I hope you can help

On an Onkyo (I have an 805) you get a MULTICH setting display when you are using the PS3 to decode the audio and pass it through to the receiver- which is the case when you set the unit to PCM. Since the PS3 can do internal decoding of DTSMA or Dolby HD, you're going to want to leave the audio settings at PCM.

What I would do is hit the select button while a movie is playing and check the upper right hand corner to see what codec is actually being decoded by the PS3 for that movie (it will say DD 5.1, HD, DTS MA, etc) and let us know. This will help determine if it's a PS3 setup problem or something with the receiver.

It has been some time now and still I never got a very good answer to my first question. I sent my question to Onkyo and they sent me this:

Thank You for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support.
We apologize for the delay in responding to your email. Due to the holidays we are experiencing a heavy volume of inquiries. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

The Sony PS3 does not allow for an undecoded Bitstream signal via HDMI to pass to the receiver so the receiver can do the decoding and you see "DTS HD-MASTER AUDIO" displayed on the front of the receiver. The PS3 is doing all of the decoding so if you press the display button for the PS3 you will see it is doing the decoding. The following settings are for the PS3 to output Dolby Digital, and all the other sound formats with an HDMI connection. If they are using optical only do step 1 and make sure in sound settings optical is selected and set the configuration to automatic.
You must go to settings in the cross media bar (start up screen)

Go to the settings bar in on the PS3
Scroll over to settings and go to Video Settings next go to BD audio settings and make sure HDMI and Optical are set to bitstream.
Go to Sound Settings then press the “x” button on the controller.
Click on HDMI then click on manual settings
Make sure Dolby Digital, DTS, and AAC all have check boxes.
Don’t worry about the linear PCM formats leave those alone
Go to the next menu by pressing right on the Directional Pad of the controller and press the “x” button to save the settings.

These setting are for the PS3 to decode sound formats internally through Linear PCM (uncompressed audio however the receiver will not display True HD or DTS Master only multichannel since the PS3 is doing all the decoding)

Go to Video settings press enter.
Go to BD/DVD Audio output settings (HDMI) and make sure HDMI output is set to Linear PCM.
Go to Sound Settings and make sure that HDMI is selected and set it to MANUAL
Make sure that ALL Linear PCM settings have a check mark as well as Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 and AAC.
Save your settings

If you have these settings and all linear PCM’s checked please note that you will only be able to get Multichannel and Direct as your listening mode even if the PS3 is set to Bitstream but the PS3 will decode Dolby Digital and DTS on its own PLEASE NOTE THAT WHEN THE PS3 IS SET TO LINEAR PCM IT CAN ONLY DECODE DTS MASTER IN 5.1 EVEN THOUGH THEY SAY IT CAN DO 7.1

Thanks,
Jose
I now have all my settings right and for the first time my Blu-Rays sound like I always knew they should
