Cannot get Pioneer system working

I have a Pioneer VSX-824 which I bought used, but I saw it working with HDMI. I wired my speakers (5.0) and plugged the HDMI into the arc port on my Samsung smart tv. My tv recognized there was a receiver but a constant ticking is coming from the fronts and nothing coming from the other 3. I hit the HDMI button on the remote but still no sound

The guy who sold it to me warned me Pioneers were tricky but I can't find anything that solves this problem.

Only audio via ARC is an issue, not inputs directly to avr? Both tv and avr are set to handle ARC (HDMI-CEC controls in general) and appropriate audio output is set in tv? Have you looked through the manuals?

ARC and/or HDMI-CEC are a mixed bag. It may or may not work at all, or it may have some quirks, or it may work great, it's a roll of the dice. And, when you mix the implementations of these features from various brands, you multiply the chances for problems.

So, the first piece of advice is, don't put all of your eggs in the ARC basket!

Have you gone through the configuration routines for both the TV and the AVR? Or did you just try to plug-and-play?

Have you gone through standard setup of the receiver according to the owner's manual?

Have you plugged a standard source into the AV receiver to see if it works properly? Like a game console, Blu-ray/DVD player, cable box, or streaming device?

If you are hearing a 'ticking' out of the speakers, and haven't gone through the general setup of the receiver itself, then that's where I would start. RTFM (if you haven't)!!!

Hello and welcome. What is the model of the Samsung TV? Are you using a new Premium Certified HDMI cable? Make sure HDMI-CEC and ARC are turned On in the receiver. Samsung labels HDMI-CEC as "Anynet +" so make sure it is On in the TV as well.

Yes, I was able to get all channels working through the xbox but when I try to use the apps on thr smart tv the ticking occurs.

I also tried using optical cable and nothing at all happened. There are very few options available in the tv menu. I think I have all of the right settings there though

I would just forget about the Arc feature and just get the TV signal source pass through the receiver, if your AVR provides for that possibility.

Try turning off HDMI-CEC(Antnet+). Audio output will switch over to TV Speakers automatically when "Anynet+" is switched off. Change the output in Settings to Optical Out. See if that works. You will need to go into Expert Settings to change the Digital Output Audio Format from PCM to Dolby Digital. DTS Neo 2:5 may be selectable on older Samsung TVs which will convert all audio output to DTS 5.1 regardless of the codec.
