I have purchased the canare 4S11 (100ft) and the banana plugs (20) to make my own cables. I have one question though, what size heatshrink do I need?

I want to put black heatshrink where I cut the sheathing off (1) and clear heatshrink on the braided + and - leads all the way up to and including the base of the banana plug (2). What size/ratio heatshrink should I purchase?

Thank you,
Chris

PS I know the picture does not include a banana plug.

Heatshrink can be purchased in 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 ratios. Buy something that will shrink to just slightly smaller size than the diameter of what you want to shrink.

For instance, if the cable to be covered is .375 diameter and you use 2:1 (shrinks to 1/2 size) heat shrink, you can use 1/2" or 5/8". If you use 3:1 (shrinks to 1/3 size), then 7/8" or 1" is the appropriate size.

Thank you, does anybody know the correct approximate diameter of the two 11awg wires twisted together??

Actually, IIRC, the 4S11 is 4 pcs of 14 ga that when tied together into a single pair yield the equivalent of 1 pair of 11 ga.

I think you'd be safe with 2:1 3/8" for the pairs.

Here is a link to the specs - http://www.canare.com/index.cfm?objectid=ED7479EC-3048-7098-AF06286428706042

Don't think it has exactly what you need but you can work backward from the OD minus the jacket thickness and then estimate the diameter of the 4 inner conductors.

oops...... I knew that........ I think I'll give 2:1 @ 3/8" a try, thanks!

All done....

Well, thanks for the help, I finally finished my cables.....I used 3/8" 2:1 heatshrink for the twisted leads and 1/2" 2:1 for the main sheathing and banana plugs. Worked like a charm! :D Too bad I made one of my cables too short.
