Canadian Sound or Bay Bloor

First off all, great forum. I've learned alot through my lurking.

So I'm in the situation where I have a fairly small room, and with a baby on the way, have decided on a set of on-wall speakers. I recognize that I wont get the sound of floorstands, but it's a trade-off I'm willing to make.

I've narrowed my choices, with the def tech mythos at the top of my list (I haven't heard the sonance yet, but will be checking them out this weekend). I checked out the FPM's, but they're quite a bit more expensive, and quite frankly don't look as good as the mythos.

So my question is: I've only found two places to buy them in Toronto, and am looking for recommendations on where to buy. It seems like Canadian Sound is more willing to deal, but I want to make sure I'll still have good after sales service.

So what does everyone think? By the way, if it matters, I may be buying a plasma as well, and if anyone has any recommendations for other speakers I should listen to, fire away.

Thanks.

Bay Bloor is the much more well known store, but if the other dealer is authorized there shouldn't be a problem going either way. Even if the other shop went out of business you'd still have a valid warranty. What you need to do is get quotes from both stores and use those to haggle with. The salesman at Bay Bloor may not be willing to give if he thinks you don't have another option, but show him a written quote and I'm sure they'll price match.

As for other speaker brands look into PSB. They just came out with some inwall/cabinet speakers that look promising.

Takeereasy, thanks for the response, and the strategy. I've heard that Bay Bloor has a great selection, but they are higher priced. Of course, I'd like a low price, but also didn't want to get screwed. Canadian Sound is authorized, so I should be okay.

Any thoughts on what sort of discount range to shoot for? I'll let you know how the negotiations go, and I'll also check out the PSB's.

Canadian Sound may not be as old or well known as Bay/Bloor, but they are not the new kids on the block either. Knowledgable staff and decent pricing. I would go with the better price and whichever store is closer to home. Parking is MUCH easier in Brampton than downtown.

To add to what JES14 says, I am sur that Bay Bloor is passing some of the their higher property taxes (ect.) to us.

Thanks for all the replies.

I actually stopped in to Bay/Bloor today, but they didn't have the Mythos speakers set up, but the salesman thought I had a better option anyway: the Totem Tribe.

I have to say, I was very impressed. The sound was very full and rich. Obviously, I couldn't compare the Mythos and Tribe back to back, but from what I remember, I think the Tribes sounded a little better than the Mythos for movies, but absolutely crushed them for music.

Has anyone else heard these, or have any opinions?

Well after listening to the Mythos again, and comparing them to the Paradigm Cinema Series, Klipsch RVX42, and Totem Tribe's, I decided on the Tribe's. They just had the most natural, and rich sound of the bunch.

I ended up getting three Tribe I's with a pair of 6.5 inch in ceiling (also from Totem) and a Totem Storm 8" sub. I pick them up next week, so I'll let you know how they sound when I get them home (incidentally, I got a 43" Pioneer Plasma as well). I couldn't afford to upgrade my reciever at the same time, so I'll make do with my old HK AVR 110 for now.... i hope it's up to the task.

Thanks for the help and input

Tribe 1 spec: impedance - 6 ohms, sensitivity - 88 dB, minimum power recommended - 30W.

The AVR110 can drive them okay but a more powerful receiver/amp will do a better job.
