Moronic people on the road are the largest risk that we (firefighters) face daily. Many people won't pull over or just stop completely and we have to go around in a 40 ton fire truck (literally, one of our trucks is THAT HEAVY). People also freak out sometimes and go all over the place. Others tailgate us trying to get through traffic faster (VERY STUPID). Something falling off the top of a fire truck could make a pretty big mess of somebody in a tailgating car.

Well, it might not be a bad idea to have police follow fire trucks and other such emergency vehicles, and give out tickets with very large fines (which should be based on net worth, not a flat amount, as a thousand or two is nothing to someone who is rich). It would be problematic, of course, in that the police to do this would be waiting around for the fire department or ambulance or whatever to be called. But if the fines were big enough, they would pay for this. Revoking driver's licenses for particularly bad offences would be a good idea, too.

Also, before going to dinner again, you might want to view Super Size Me.

when riding the tailboard of the truck was still allowed, if cars were tailgating it was very dangerous cause a firefighter could fall off and get run over. I wasn't a FF then, but the guys who've been around a long time tell me that a wrench or two might 'accidently' be dropped off the back if cars were tailgating. Too bad those days are gone! Pretty good lesson I think.
