Can you paly music CD's in surround sound?

I was at someones house a while back and they were playing music CD'd through the front and rear speakers.

Can surround sound do that? or did he just have them hooked up in some unconventional way, as I can't get my Onkyo to do that?

I'm not sure what your Onkyo's capabilities are, but most receivers have a DSP mode that allows them to send a stereo signal over all the surround channels. Play around with the DSP modes.

The Onkyo's can certainly do that (as well as pretty much every other receiver). I personally use ProLogic II Music mode to play cds in surround. Other DSP modes that will do it are DTS:Neo6 and All Channel Stereo.

Or it could have been a 5 channel DTS CD
