Can the Velo SMS-1 be controled by universal remote?

I'm looking at buying an SMS-1 from a guy but he "lost" or broke the remote who knows right? He claims that you can use a universal remote to function the SMS-1. I've never used one so I don't know what type of commands are needed to operate it. Do people who have one feel like this could work using a universal remote to operate the SMS? Any feedback is appreciated.

I had my Harmony1 set up to control my SMS. If I remember correctly, I had to teach some functions using the remote to remote method.

I control my SMS-1 from my Harmony 890 with no issues. I may also have an extra remote so let me know if you need it.

I controlled an SMS-1 with an MX-700 and an MX-900. I bet that there are quite a few basic universal remotes that don't have a code for the SMS-1, but any remote that you can program via the computer should have no problem with it.
