Can someone explain upscaling to me (1080p, for example)

Gentlemen:

I hope this thread isn't too ignorant. it's something that may be obvious, but I 've never read any specific topic explaing detailed specifics as to what is exactly meant by a HT Receiver's ability to upscale a signal.

To be completely specific, I just purchased the Yamaha RX-V2700, and I know it can convert/upscale a signal to higher resolution, but I am not exactrly sure what signal they're talking about.

I mean, in a perfect world, this thing would take my sh!tty, compressed as hell digital cable signal and upscale/convert it to 780p, 1080i, or 1080p, making it all HD. However, I know that to not be the case, as my cable provider compresses the sh!t out of their signals to fit more content, leving me with 20 beautiful HD channels, and 400 cartoon-looking regular channels.

I guess what I want to know is, where does this upscaling come in handy? Watching DVD's? What do I need to do to implement the upscaling? Is it something that's done automatically?

Any and ALL info on this is very much appreciated. I will dig into my owner's manual on this, but the busy holiday schedule limited my time thus far.

Thanks.

I just got the rx v1700 wich is almost identical to the 2700 .
You have about 10 more watts, 1 more HDMI and network connection....
Well i havnt put it into service yet but it supposed to work with the Composit and s video and upscale them.
It wont upsacale the Cable signal, I wish it did lol
Make sure you set the setting to upscale in the set up menue for the input your using.
Once my speakers come in im going to set mine up so i dont have all the answers yet sorry .

Yamaha features

Both the Yamaha RX-V1700 and RX-V2700 feature video Format Conversion. This means that they can take a composite video, svideo, or component video input and output it over component video or HDMI. This feature does not improve video quality, but it reduces the number of cables you need to your TV.

The RX-V2700 and older 2600 also offer video Upscalling. This will convert a 480i or 480p analog input and upscalle to 720p or 1080i. If the scaller in the yamaha is better than the one in your TV then you will seen an improvement, but it wont do miracles with compressed cable channels. You will have to experiment with the cable box and DVD player to determine if you get better performance with an HDMI connection or component video + upscalling.
Note: on the Yamaha RX-V2600, the receiver will not upscale an HDMI input due to copy protection issues.

 Am I to understand that the 2700 can upscale HDMI input then?

Jeje2,
You are taking my post out of context.

The Yamaha RX-V2600 has been out for a while and its features are well documented. I do no own and have not read any reviews of the new RX-V2700 so I would assume that it CANNOT upscale an HDMI input like the previous RX-V2600 unless I hear otherwise. If you are interested in this perticular feature, email Yamaha directly and post their response. Hopefully AH will have a review of the RX-V2700 out soon.

Yes I am, but the writing leaves one to assume what I wrote. (First you state that one doen't do it and then write nothing about the second leaving it's abilities unclear)

Yes - and as my sig states, I own one.

Thank you for clarification.
As I haven't read much about V2700 (and can't remember reading that it could, something manufacturer most likely would be interested to tell) - the idea of upscaling from HDMI certainly got my attention and I wanted a clarification. (I've been proven wrong on the V2600 already too, so wanted to ask a clarification)

Video Scaling

Jeje2,
No problem, I just did not want to be the source of unfounded rumors. Hopefully an AH review will clear this up soon.

If you are really interested in video scalling, check out the products from DVDO which include high end ABT scalers and lots of inputs.
