Can I use these speakers?

I recently bought a new Accurian AV Receiver. It says its output is 110WATTS x 6 Channels and it needs 6 OHM speakers. The speakers I have to use are 40WATT (Max) and 8OHMs. Will the receiver blow out the speakers since they can't handle anymore than 40 WATTS? I can't really afford anymore speakers at this time and I am trying to hook this up. Thank you for any help you can give. Also is the WATTS in relation to the volume I turn it up to i.e. if I don't turn them up too high I can use the speakers?

Yes, there is a potential to blow your speakers by overpowering them. Although it's a general number a max power rating of 40 W is somewhat low for speakers. You're right that if you keep the volume down, there will be no trouble. In fact, even at a spirited level (spirited, but not extremely lout), you will likely not be using 40W. Also note that the receiver will actually put out less power (i.e., fewer watts) than rated when driving an 8 ohm load (as opposed to the 6 ohm load for which it is rated). It will still put out much more than 40 W, but it will be less than 110 W.

So, all that said, just use it at a reasonable level, and you'll be fine.
