I want to ad an extrenal amp to my AVR and slow move towards separates. I have some nice component video cables... can I use 2 of them as RCA connection from AVR to external amp?

Yes, but know this.

RCA is the types of plugs on the ends of the interconnect, not an interconnect type. So, in essence, both cables you're referring to can be called "RCA cables". The more accurate question would have been "Can I use a component video interconnect for an audio interconnect?"

A lot of people don't know this. Now, you can consider yourself one of the more erudite audio aficionados.

Thanks! I connected my external amp to my AVR using the component cables and it seems to work fine.

As stated before, the answer to this question is YES.

However, please note the reverse situation (sending a video signal on an audio interconnect) is not recommended. This is because the video interconnect is designed to handle higher bandwidth signals than an audio interconnect is, so sending a video signal on an audio interconnect (lower bandwidth capability) may not work well.
