Got myself a 5th gen 30gb video Ipod today in black of course. Hot damn this thing is small, I was imagining the Nano to be this size not a regular ipod. A co-worker has a 1st gen and when comparing the two you could stack 2 5th gen on top of each other and still be thinner than the 1st gen. Videos look really sharp on it so far and I downloaded all my pics from my computer onto it too.

This should help keep me entertained for a while, especially on the number of flights I'll be taking here in the next couple of months. I really need to find a good case for it though, already have smudges all over the black face. Plus the way my cell phone looks(I drop it at least once a week) I think it would be a very wise investment.

Also picked up a few accessories with it:
-AC travel charger(need to find an DC charger for the car)
-Belkin cup holder mount which works perfect in the new car(3 cup holders available, placed it in the center one next to the handbrake.)
-Belkin FM transmitter(temporary fix until I get my Pioneer head unit installed.)

Yes you can.

The digital mp3 players beat the hell out of portable CD players. Now get yourself some good headphones to go with it and you will be set. I got the Sony MDR-EX71SL and while they sound better than the original phones they are not perfect. One nice thing about them is they go in your ear and when flying they cut out a lot of plane noise. But some moron at Sony decided to have the wires coming out of the ear buds in different lengths so the wire runs straight out of your left ear and the right one swings over to meet it. It's minor but I feel tension on the left ear and have to mess with it frequentely. But overall a nice improvement for $40.

I have some Sony like those that I use with my Rio mp3 player that I take on runs with me and know exactly what your talking about with the unequal length wires.

Haven't decided on over-the-ear headphones or ear buds but do want noise cancellation regardless.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who thinks so. ;)

why does everyone buy Ipods?

I don't get it.

Creative Zen's are WAY cheaper then Ipods, and Offer more features, like a 5 band EQ. But everyone gets the crappy Ipizzle.

5th gen's have an EQ too.:p I know, I felt the same way too but there is so much aftermarket for the ipod unreal. My biggest grip is the non-replacable battery.

What I don't get

I consider FM radio essential. This is why I would never buy any MP3 player that doesn't have one. Why FM radio, you might ask? Simple really---the latest music and news.

Yeah I guess so but like I stated in the sat. radio thread I only get 3-4 stations and they all suck so FM wasn't a concern for me.

I bought a 30gb 5g iPod for my son this last Christmas. At times in the past I wanted one for myself, but always figured it was likely a waste of money. As I was ripping CDs for it prior to Christmas morning I found I really liked it and decided to pick up the 60gb for myself. I do agree that Apples competitors are catching up and some offer some pretty good value, but as you mention, the aftermarket support for iPod is unreal. This kind of third party support will keep it on top for quite some time to come.

And as for the battery - it sucks that it is not something easily replaceable, but if you search on the net you will find companies that sell replacement batteries with instructions for replacement.

3rd Gens had an EQ also. The biggest problem with iPods, and all MP3 players for that matter, is that you need to use your home PC to add any new media (legally downloaded or imported from other media), and thus listen to it. If I take a 2 week trip to China I can't listen to any new CDs until after I get home and forgot why I bought them.

The answer is obvious: Buy a $9 Durabrand PCDP at Wal*Mart and keep it in your car (or travel luggage), then spend your $290 savings (over an iPod) to buy more music.

Understandable, but having a laptop with a wireless internet connection solves those concerns.;) I don't travel anywhere without my Dell.

I've officially smudged the every living h$%# out of it so far. Got on ebay and won me a Iskin Evo3 case for it. Seems to be, from all the reviews, the one to get.

Comments on the accessories I've bought:

Belkin FM transmitter.....sucks, cuts out frequently despite the station it's set on. Need to get a Ipod ready MP3 Player really soon.

Belkin cupholder docking station......really like it so far, no complaints.

AC adaptor.....haven't used but don't see myself running into any problems with it.

Ipod.......Really enjoying it, have a whopping 90 songs on there with 3 videos and 70-80 pictures. Came in handy when I went into discount tire looking for new rims and having a photo of what style of wheel I was looking for.
