can a dvd hold 8 channels of audio?

i think dvds can only hold 7 channels , but i have no idea, and a web search didnt help, just seein if its possible...

Probably CAN, but not sure any of them DO. I think 6.1 was it for DVD and 7.1 was matrixed from the 6th channel. Pretty sure we didn't get discrete 7.1 until Blu-ray with the newer codecs.

ok thanks alot , been killin me i cudnt find that out, one person said he had a dvd with dts 7.1 audio, i think he is mistaken, and he never told me wut movie it was, on another chat board i was on

Hypothetically speaking if it's 480/720p video with HD-DTS 7.1 audio in MKV file container burned on the DVD, then you "technically" have a DVD with 7.1 sound, but AFAIK very few if any at all hardware device would play such "dvd" :)

I am almost 100% certain that the last codec for DVD was dts-ES and it was 6.1 only; 7.1 was achieved via the processor which would properly decode into the two rear channels. There were two flavors of 6.1 as well - there were tracks that were actually matrixed themselves (mixed that way, Dolby Digital EX was 6.1 Matrix) and those listed above (may be more than that, but not many) that were mastered with a discrete 6th channel.
