can a computer subwoofer be used for anything?

I have an old set of 5.1 logitech z-640 speakers and all the channels are blown except one of the rear channels and the subwoofer. I was wondering if anyone has ever though about putting a computer subwoofer to use,... even if it's just for fun. I was going to take it apart for fun,.. just want to see if anyone else has played around with this area =)

I've had Logitech speakers with sub and although it is powerful it is also kind of boomy. I'm not sure how good a job it would do in a HT setup.

But, even if you wanted to use it you may have some difficulties. The one I had had a DIN plug to connect all the speakers. You wouldn't be able to connect that to a normal receiver. If yours has high-level (speaker level) inputs, it maybe could be used but speaker level inputs create other issues. It might be a fun experiment but I'd probably just ditch it.

It looks like your Logitech's have the audio signals routed through the center channel, which also controls the volume levels. You could always keep the center channel in the loop (as it apparently makes no noise anyway) and just use it as a volume control for the sub. Worth trying out, at least.

I had an Altec Lansing 4.1 system, and I wanted to salvage the sub for use with a set of Logitech speakers because that sub sucked...not the same one as yours, btw. The volume of the Altec sub was controlled by the right front speaker, but I didn't want to use it that way. So, I modified the two subs so that the amp in the Logitech sub would amplify the woofer in the Altec sub (so the volume of the Altec sub was controlled by the Logitech controls). Worked great.
