Hello all.

New to the high end CD player club.

I want to ask a rookie question.

I am looking at these two models 640 ($600) 740 ($1000)

So for $400 more dollars is it worth getting an upsampling CD player?

I am going to hear that much of a difference?

Is there anyone here that owns either model and can tell me what they like/dislike? And if you shopped between the two why did you make the decision you made?

Let me know and thank you in advance!!

So no one has a comment?

So no one is out there that has a comment on Upsampling versus normal CD? Or does no one here own Cambridge audio CD players?

Let me know.

try asking at the audioreview.com forums. A lot of guys over there use Cambridge CD players.

Try audiogon site as well...lots of knowledge there with HI end...I mean real HI end most of which is way out of my league/budget but it's nice to stay in the know about the exotic stuff.

My pre-pro has upsampling chip so I don't know whether it makes a tremendous difference but it is a bit...cleaner is the best way to describe it when used on my system. I suppose a rig without cd upsampling would benefit some. There are reviews on that player you know...? do a goog search.

Also try posting your question at sterophile.com forums. Most of the people here use digital connections rather than high-end analog pre-amps (have my feet in both arenas). There are several there that would be glad to discuss your question. My view is that the difference would be quite subtle.

The big advantage of the 740C over the 640C are the 2 extra digital inputs for other components and using the upsampling technology used in the top line model, the 840C, and ties it with the fine Wolfson DACs used in the 640C.

The 840 uses Analog Devices AD1955 DACs which some claim is superior sound.
It's a personal choice. If you can hear an advantage of one of the other, then that's what you should get. But the jump from the 740 to the 840 is a good $300-400, depending where you shop.

You are not even going to hear a difference between the 740C and the 340C, much less the 640C.

Hi. I've been wondering about this too, recently. Did you get any feedback?
