Calling all JBL Experts/Fans for brightness help

Just moved into a bigger place so I wanted a Bigger stereo. JBL was a favorite among friends a long time ago and i have great memories of getting visited by the cops late at night listening to the L100t's. I looked around locally and found a clean pair of CF100's and thought I would start out with that and progress up. I have a JVC RX803V pushing them and have tried a JVC 5 disc changer and a Magnavox HDMI DVD player as well. I also tried a Yamaha Amp. The problem is that they are really bright and harsh no matter what I plug them in to. I have them well away from the rear wall (12') in a narrow room and 8' from me and eachother toed into my head, about 2' away from the side walls, though I have tried many different positions including a sever toe out which wasnt terrible. I cant seem to get the treble under control and when I turn it down too low the sound stage falls on the floor and i loose all those great JBL highs, and vocals. The speakers have an almost hissing sound and at high volume usually there is some kind of strong harmonic resonating. I took the grilles off the mid range drivers which seemed to help a little. While they are not L100t's I hoped to get some mileage out of them. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Seriously, I have no life.
Keep shopping. Those have titanium tweeters and they're notorious for being harsh and overly bright. Also, you're too close to them. If the room is mainly hard surfaces, you'll definitely have a hard time taming the highs. You might want to look for something with a textile dome tweeter (also called 'soft dome'). Just about anything with Vifa, Peerless, Scan-Speak or other Scandanavian drivers will sound much smoother.
