Calibration question

I was calibrating my new Ascends last night (with a ratshack analog meter using the receivers test tones) and something struck me as odd...

I have 340's across the front and the left and rights are the same volume but I had to bring the center speaker down 4db's. Why? It's the same speaker.

Any thoughts? Is this common?

I have a Yamaha RX-V2500 receiver and when you put a DVD in a "dialog lift" message is displayed...that shouldn't come into play when using the receivers test tones should it?

The center may be the same speaker but it is not in the same position relative to your ears (and the spl meter) and will interact with the room differently than the other speakers.

Hi MDS,

Thanks for the response.

I could be wrong but 4db's...isn't that alot.

All three speakers are 11.5' feet away and are on each side and on top of a good old "entertainment center" that is approximately 5.5'-6' wide x 4.5'-5' tall on the short wall of my room which is approximately 13.5' x 20.5' x 8'.

The difference between my fronts and center is 6db.

My center adjustment is also set 4db lower than my left. Gear is in sig. Front speakers are the same. My main concern is that the spl's are equal which they are after the adjustments have been made. ;)
