I have a 50" Panasonic 720P and wanted to calibrate it for the best results that I can get. I borrowed Digital Video Essentials from a friend but it was a pretty old disc used in the CRT days. Is there anything superior to this that will provide you good quality for a do it yourselfer.

I've got the same disc. I just calibrated my new Panasonic with it and the only portion of the disc that seemed outdated was the "contrast" section which used CRT blooming to find an accurate white level.

I read online and found that if you go to the Reference Materials section and find Title 13, Chapter 2 that there's a test pattern of boxes that works well (there will be a black box with grey inside and a white box with grey inside - use brightness and contrast to get these grey inner boxes just visible). Other than that, things like color accuracy and sharpness haven't changed.

That's my two cents.

Do you have a Blu-ray player? If so DVE had released a high def version of their disk link.

I am using the Spears & Munsil disk that Oppo gives out with their player link.

I do not have the DVE disk so I cannot comment on the differences between the two. I have played around with the Spears & Munsil disk quite a bit to calibrate my projector and after using it 4 or 5 times I feel I have the best picture I can get.

I do have the Sony BDP-s550 so I could get that disc. Do you feel that the spears and munsil disc is a good tool?

Yes I do not feel I would have the image quality that I have now without the disk. The only negative is that I only used a few of the patterns for my purpose. It has many features that I did not need now or care to use but down the road who knows.

I've been using the AVCHD one you can download at AVS forum but am getting the Spears and Munsil Blu-ray one for Christmas. I've read where it is the best - don't know if it is yet as it still ain't Christmas ... ;)
