Cablebox output settings

New to the forum so I want to thank everyone ahead of time for their responses.

System consists of a Mitsubishi WD65732 65" DLP, Pioneer Elite VSX94 Receiver, Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HDC cable box and Sony BDP-S500 Blu-Ray player. Everything is connected via HDMI through the receiver and then into the DLP via HDMI.

My question is what output resolutions should I have the cable box set to, 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or some combination thereof.

Again thanks

Anything more then just set it to 1080i?
Sorry, for the short answer. Your TV can handle 1080i so you can get the best resolution by setting to your TV's highest resolution.

Also you Pioneer AVR has very good upscaling ,so all devices will have 1080i HDMI output, even older stnadard video DVDs.

If you really want a good TV picture change to satellite (DirecTV or DishNetwork) .

Good luck:)!

You have multiple devices that can scale (cable box, receiver, and TV) so really the only answer is to experiment and see which one produces the best result.

I have an older Scientific Atlanta 3100HD and it doesn't have any options - it always scales everything to 1080i. I'd like to be able to set it to just pass thru the resolution of the source unchanged because I'd bet the $3K TV will do a better job of scaling than the cable box.

I prefer 720P as its a purer signal with no interlaced pixels but see what you think looks good to you.......thats all that matters.

Thanks, but what I have read about the Pioneer is that it does not convert HDMI signals and passes them in their native format.

Here is what I found!

Thanks, but what I have read about the Pioneer is that it does not convert HDMI signals and passes them in their native format.
There reason I said that about the Pioneer was from the following:

from Pioneer's web site:
HDMI® Video Up-Scaling To 1080p (Faroudja DCDi)

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/HomeEntertainment/AV-Receivers/EliteReceivers/ci.VSX-94TXH.Kuro?tab=B

That is why I thought it upscaled and Faroudja is one of the best upscalers.

And true some people like 720P, I personally prefer 1080i ( my current TV does not support 1080P only 1080i). It is a matter of personal preference, but I see better resolution with 1080i even though it is interlaced.

Good Luck!

I hav the Elite 94, the Mits WD83365, and the SA8300. I've been screwing around with settings the past couple of days. I think right now the biggest culprit has been my signal from Knology Cable, so it's been a bit hard to really be sure, but I think and I'm pretty sure that I'm getting noticiably better picture from using the Pass Through option on my box and letting the Mits do the processing.

I have my OPPO connected HDMI to the 94 but I believe the OPPO is doing the upconversion and sending the 1080p signal to the 94 and passing it to the TV. It was my understanding that the OPPO had superior deinterlacing/upconversion prowness.

Seems to me the best thing to do is let the cablebox "auto-select" what resolution to output at based on the signal that it is receiving.

I just tried sending the cable signal to the 94 via component and then upconverted to 1080p to the TV and I have to say it did not look nearly as good as I thought it would.

Anyone know what the native resolution of the Mits wd65-7372 is?

your display is native 1080p, so 1080i would be, imo, the best choice for output from the cable box. If you can pass unaltered signals, your display should do a nice job of scaling to its resolution. Have you calibrated your display yet?
