Here's what I'm currently doing... not sure if it's right or not.

Cable from the wall goes into my Satellite reciever...
HDMI goes from Reciever to the TV
Fiber Optic from the AVR - 890 to the TV
Compents still go to TV...

Does this sound close? I only have one HDMI on my TV

I don't understand the fibre optic link from the AVR to the TV. I would expect the HDMI to pass the audio.

Don’t see any audio connection between the sat receiver and the AVR. Of course, if all you want is the TV speakers when watching TV, then you’re fine.

I would like the option to use the speakers when watching tv (xm, etc.) and then to pump the xm tv out to the porch speakers. I'm trying to remember want the guy at Bestbuy said (i know, that's making a lot of you cringe) but I'm pretty lame when it comes to this stuff. Sorry, hope you can be patient with me. Maybe i can learn something today, once and for all. I'd like to set it up as right as I can (and if I need another cable or two, great..) so that it makes sense and I get the maximum benefit of my equipment... even if it's not the top of the line gear. Does that make sense?

Here's my equipment:

Denon avr-890
Yamaha CDC-715
Sony 60" KDF-60WF655
Directv HD reciever H20-100
Sony BluRay BDP-S360
Sony DVD DVP-NS50P
Harmony One Remote
Polk RM 6000's

Cables: I have (2) HDMI's and (1) Fiber optic and all kinds of the blue, red and yellows... and all kinds of the other rca patch cords.

So I don't need the fiber optic? I think he was saying something about running everything through the HDMI except the sound???? Are you guys all laughing??? or are you crying????

Ok, for starters, any source you want piped through the AVR/Zone 2 will require stereo analog connections, digital alone won’t work.

Since the TV only has 1 HDMI, it’s probably wise to run the sources through the AVR and use it to up-convert to HDMI any video sources connected via component.

Now if you want to watch TV without the AVR, then you would also want to run component/stereo cables from the Sat. Rec. to the TV.

DTV STB – AVR : HDMI/Stereo RCA
AVR - TV : HDMI
DTV STB - TV : Component/ Stereo RCA (may need a couple Y-adapters)

Sony BluRay – AVR : HDMI/Stereo RCA?

Sony DVD – AVR : Component/Digital Coax/Stereo RCA?

Yamaha CDC – AVR : Digital (Coax/Optical)/Stereo RCA

Hope this helps. The DVD/CD players seem redundant now that you have the BD Player, although one or the other might be more handy.

Thanks avrat... this was exactly what i was looking for!! I do still have a couple of ?'s however.

When you say, "Ok, for starters, any source you want piped through the AVR/Zone 2 will require stereo analog connections, digital alone won’t work." is that why my porch speakers sounded "muffled" when I piped the tv sound through them?

Also, if I cannot attach an optical to my cd player (it's 18 years old) should I just use the regular rca cables? I'm guessing there would be no use for the optical then either, right?

I have the cd player because it's a multidisc player. Some of our dvd's don't play on the bluRay either, hence the sony dvd player. I could connect the bluRay with the other hdmi, right?

If you meant with this connection, I’m surprised you heard anything.

Yes, the stereo RCAs work just fine.

It’s kind of funny, in a sad way, but it makes sense. Yes, per my previous reply, you need 3-HDMI connections.
See my bolded responses above.

thanks again... I didn't keep the regular dvd player. I figure we haven't had one of those redbox dvd's not play in a few months, now.

I'm not sure if I heard anything through the optic or not... I had a handful of things hooked up

Gotta find a way to get the speakers adjusted through the auto setup function. I wonder if I got a mic that isn't compatible with the Denon???

Gotta find new speakers... i have some nice BIC's in the basement that really sound nice... but she doesn't like the way they look. It's all satellites!!!

I think one of the coolest things here is the Harmony Remote! Still making some adjustments, but I think it's going to be really cool...
