I am trying to hook up my HT and I have no idea how the Digital Box fits in. Right now, I have the Coax from the wall to the Box and from the Box to the TV. Do I just stay with this set up or is there something more?

I want to run everything through the AV Receiver and I have no recording device, just a DVD Player. The Cable box has the Red/White/Yellow analog jacks and that's it. Am I suppose to hook them up to the Receiver like I see some Diagrams? Also, the Yamaha 1400 receiver has a Optical (CBL/SAT) jack. Is this suppose to be incorporated into the Set-up somehow?

Sorry, just one more thing. The highest Video connection on my TV is an S-Video and I believe it's the only connection I need from the TV to the Receiver or do I need to connect the audio as well?

Thanks in advance,

Digital

Also run the yellow video cable from the box to the yellow (video 1) input of the 1400.

Keep the RF cable connection from the wall to the cable box. Lose the RF cable coming out from the cable box, you don't need it.

Run the DVD player video into the 1400 using an s-video cable (video 2 or DVD input) and use a coax optical cable (single RCA) from the digital S/PDIF output on the DVD player to the S/PDIF digital input on the 1400.

Now take your s-video (monitor out) from the 1400 and run it into the s-video of your TV. If you want to play audio on your TV and not speakers, then hook up the L/R pre-outs (red/white) to your TV as well (same input section as the s-video cable)

Future upgrades:
Get a TV with component video inputs (RGB)
Get some speakers/surrounds if you don't have any

Tips to Learn through Doing:
Read your DVD manual and determine how you want the audio to come out - it's configurable depending upon whether you have surround sound speakers or not.

If I wanted to play TV audio through my Speakers, would I hook up the TV audio out to the Receiver Audio In (at the Video 1 input)? With this connection, can I still switch between audio on TV and audio on Speakers. In other words, my goal is to have the option of listening to the TV audio source through the TV's speakers or my HT speakers. Can I do this and what are the conections?

Thanks, Dano

Follow the instructions described by Hawke. That will give you the feed through the receiver for sound. His latter instructions continue the sound feed to the tv. Bear in mind, with only RCA feeds from cbl box you WILL NOT get a Dolby Dig surround signal. CumFast is,in my mind, screwing its subscribers by charging them for digital cbl but not providing access to a digital sound signal.A friend of mind has inquired about this very thing & he's been told they don't have a box for that unless you upgrade to HD.I have a dish & had to make sure it had a digital output for sound on it as many free dish packages dont include a receiver with that option. For an extra $15-$20 you can upgrade to one at time of purchase.
There has to be either an optical or a digital coax output on the box to feed the digital signal to your receiver for processing.

Thanks all for taking the time to help me out. I am close to hooking everything up and have another question.

I read where all my video cables should be of the same style.
I.E., all S-Video or all Component Video. I have S-Video from the TV to the Receiver and Component from the Receiver to the DVD Player. Will this work or do I need to go with all S-Video since that is my TV's highest Video Port.

Most of this will be evident to you once you start hooking things up.

If you only have s-video in on your TV, stay with that on your other connections.

I still need some help.

Equipment: Yamaha 1400, Axiom and SVS speakers 5.1. Mitsubishi 40" CRT Monitor.

Requirement: I want to have a choice of listening to a TV Source through either the Speakers or the TV.

Problem: based on my Connections below, I have audio simultaneously coming out of the Speakers and TV. Plus, I can only get the Surrounds to work when the 1400 is set to "7 CHANNEL STEREO" mode. They do not work on the PLII mode or any other. I can also control the sound of both the speakers and TV with either the Receiver or Cable Box remote. Maybe this is the best I can do, but somehow I don't think so.

Connections: TV S-Video out to Receiver S-Video in. TV audio out to Receiver DTV in: The following is where I am having trouble. TV Audio In to where on my receiver? I tried the Pre-out section for Surround, but this did nothing and I don't see any Monitor Audio out on the back panel of the Receiver. I have the cable box hooked up with "Cable in" from the wall. I had to hook up the “Cable Box out” to the TV ant "A" so I could get a picture. The RF connections on the Cable Boxed are looped together (RF "in" to RF is connected with a coax loop)

I know that I will need a HD Cable box in order to get 5.1 Digital Sound and will need a HDTV for the complete experience someday, but is there any help with my requirement today?

Thanks as always

Have you double checked the settings in your setups?
Most dvds ship with the dts feature turned off. Go into dvd player's setup, and set the digital output to bitstream, not pcm.
Then go into your receiver's setup menus, and slowly, step by step (with manual), go through complete setup. You will need to activate inputs for digital or analog, whichever you have connected, for the source you have connected to that input.
If you have a subwoofer, you will probably have to turn it on, in the receiver's setup too. With a sub, set your other speakers to small. That will send all of the LFE (bass) signal to the subwoofer. Without a sub, set your speakers to large.
You said in first post, you have a digital cable box? If so, you'll run a digital coax or optical cable (whichever output box has) to the DBS/TV audio input on receiver. Also, if it's a Digital box, it should have an s-video cable out to s-video input for DBS/TV on receiver. If it's not digital, run red & white rca audio cables out from box to DBS/TV composite inputs on receiver, and yellow rca video cable out from box to DBS/TV composite video input on receiver.
For dvd player.......run digital coax or optical cable (whichever player has) out from dvd to the dvd digital audio input on receiver. Then run s-video cable from dvd output to the dvd s-video input on receiver.
Then run an s-video cable from receiver (monitor out) to video 1 input on tv. If you had to use the red, white and yellow cables from cable box, and you don't get a pic from cable station, you may need to run the yellow cable from the cable box to the tv, instead of to the receiver.
Now remember.......you won't use channel 3 on tv to watch cable or dvd. You'll need to set the tv's input on video1 or 2, depending on the inputs you use on the back of the tv. The ONLY reason you use tv, is for video. Turn sound completely off on tv. Control sound from receiver's remote.
I'm not familiar with a Yamaha, but my friend's Denon is set on 7 ch. stereo, when listening to 5.1 movies. So, that's ok. With this setup, and as long as you did the receiver's setup right, you should get pro logic from MOST of what you listen to, that's not 5.1 surround.
I think your problems are coming from the receiver's and the dvd's setups not being quite right. I know this stuff is confusing, but if you take it slow and go STEP-BY-STEP, you'll get it right and be proud of yourself!
Good luck! Let us know how it goes............

Looks like you need to go into your tv onscreen audio menu. Go into audio and you should have a choice for audio out. Set to on (fixed) for stereo output & off for tv sound.
Hawke's connections are correct.

The trouble is I don't understand Hawke's connections and that is why I am still in this thread.

This would be much easier on the Wife so she doesn't have to mess with the Amp.
