Yes Birch is fine. Look for 13ply stuff, I didnt find any around here when I built my pair of subs so I used the 7 ply stuff from lowes, if i could do it all over i would have looked harder for the 13ply but even the 7 ply is better than what pretty much every speaker out on the commercial market is made up of.
