buying panny plasma help

Looking for some input on which model to buy for a panny plasma 50" I'm not one who needs to chase the latest and greatest technology so I don't see myself buying a new 3d set. My dvd player just died over the weekend and I finally entered the blu ray world and purchase the panny bd601 player based on several threads I read on this site.

The tv the plasma will be replacing is a 15 year old 32" tube tv.

Tv will be in the basement - couple large windows just behind the tv, but this set will be mostly watched at night for movies and on a rare occasion a sporting event but we typically what the sporting events upstairs and our day to day watching is mainly upstairs.

I was reviewing the different models and you have the U series, S series, v10, g10, g25 and I don't really understand which model to get. Again this tv won't be used much mainly on the weekends to watch a couple movies. I have the home theater setup downstairs.

You don't sound like a critical viewer, so I think the S2 would suit your needs just fine.

How does the TCP50G10 compare to the S2 model?

a store about an hour away is clearancing them out for $799 and I see the S2 model is about $999 and most places have the g10 at about $1200.

G10 over S2 for THX mode and more flexible consumer level pic controls. There may be other little things as well, but those are the main two I think.

If you are patient, and glue yourself to the internet and forums, I'm pretty certain you can better that G10 price. But, that takes time and effort, and you might make a lot more money working, given that time.

50" may sound big to you, but depending on your distance, you may want to go bigger so that you can even benefit from 1080, which offers more than 6x the resolution of 480.

Oh ok, movies only in a dedicated dark basement area. The V10 or equivalent can bypass 3:2 pulldown, I believe it was with 96hz, which is essentially a must for my own movie viewing.

You might want to consider a projector, given the very particular usage, room, and for almost only night viewing.

Good luck.

I would take the G10 over the S2 without a doubt.

The S2 is a step backwards from the S1. It has absolutely no light filters and any light in the room washes out the darker areas of the picture. It reminds me of plasmas from 5 years ago! I really don't get why they did that.

The only explanation I can think of is that Panny wanted to have more to distinguish the S2 from the G20. The S1 and G10 had the *same* panel and the differences were all under the hood. The difference between the S2 and the G20 is night and day (literally). That makes for a great upsell in the store but for anyone expecting to get similar performance with an S2 while saving a bit of money will likely be disapointed unless they're watching the set in a black hole.

I'm going to call the store tomorrow and see what they have in a 54" for the S1 and G10 as I know they are clearancing out their old models.

I thought $799 for a 50" G10 was a good price. How much lower do you think I'll be able to find it for jostenmeat?

Oh, my bad, I thought it was the $1200 figure. I think that's a very fair price, and if you need one now, it's a good value. It may be possible that you can find cheaper at some point in time, but how much will you really save with shipping differences, reliability/reputation of reseller, etc.

To reiterate my thoughts/vote/hunch when considering:

Basement/cave + Purely movies, ok for the most part =

I like both the idea of big, and 24p w/o 3:2.

But, again, I think a G10 50" for $799 is solid. That is truly an excellent value, IMO.

I totally agree with purchasing the G series...good price too. THX mode is pretty awesome...if you get the g10 and the thx mode has a greenish tint, call panasonic and they will send a tech to your home for the latest firmware update. Most of them should be up to date by now. It's an awesome tv...I have a g series and a v series...wouldn't trade them for anything within that price range.

They sold their last 3 new in box 50" g10's yesterday and only have the display model left and want the same price $799 for it. ERRR Not sure i want to buy a display model as I have no idea how many hours that thing has on it. He said it's been on display for 6 months. I'm guessing 6 months in a store is about 6-8 years in my home based on how much I'll use it.

They have the 54" s1 for $1199 or the G10 for $1399. No 58's left. I see amazon has the 58" s1 for $1499 shipped.
