If you had the opportunity to purchase the Denon DVD 3800BDCI versus the newer Oppo BDP-83 which one would you decide on? I can get a good deal on the Denon while the Oppo in itself is newer and networkable for firmware upgrades.

Why would you choose one versus the other?

Thanks,

Al

The Oppo wins hands down, as far as I'm concerned. There are lots of SACDs and DVD-A discs out there that sound great, just as good as the new Blu-Ray discs. If you're going to have surround sound capability, why would you choose a player that couldn't play all formats?

I agree with Peter. For that reason would I choose the Oppo.

However, if you are absolutely 100% positive that you won't care about SACD/DVDA, Denon makes VERY fine players. It also just looks very nice, and you would have a more unique player than what one would commonly see. :D

I don't have SACD/DVDA capability, atm. They both are very fine players, I'm sure. I suppose the first thing I would research is the FW support, historically speaking. Hm.

Meh, go with the Oppo. :p

That's not a fair comparison. One is an audio/video universal player and the other is just a BD player. If I were to do it again I would go the separate route.

You are right, but I have to agree with Josten and Peter here. The OPPO supports all formats and I would rather have to deal with an Oppo customer rep than a Denon one any day of the week ,and I own 2 Denon pieces.....

I'd go Oppo, you can't beat it for the features it has.

It's likely it will upscale regular DVDs every bit as good as the Denon if not better. The Denon has the Reon Realta HQV processor for upscaling, which a fantastic engine. The Oppo uses the newer ABT VRS scaler which is competing with the Realta and new Genesis chip manufactured by Faroudja/Meridian.

If the Denon was within $100 of the Oppo it's worth consideration of SACD and DVD-Audio formats hold no interest for you, but I would otherwise select the Oppo

Major Update!

I pulled the trigger and ordered the Oppo this morning as apposed to the Denon 3800BDCI.

I understand the Denon to be an excellent unit and the price was right but the Oppo simply offers more as far as it being universal and it being more easily to upgrade the FW.

I will also order the Emotiva ERC-1 for dedicated CD listening as I understand this player is one of the finest bargains in audio. I take listening to 2 channel music serious and I hope the ERC-1 will not disapoint!

Any comments?

Thanks to all who chimed in!

Okay...One More Thing

Since the 83 has USB 2.0 ports, can I use my external HD to play music and video through the 83. Not necessarily (sp) low-fi MP3s but high resolution music.

Thanks again!

Once you have both players, set up a blind test to see if you can really hear a difference.

Great review! To think there were no "lows" in the review is awesome. By the way, my player arrives on Tuesday just in time for my birthday.

On Monday I plan to order the Emo ERC-1 just for 2 channel CD playback. I'm pumped.

wow........that oppo sounds like an impressive unit. i hope i won't be disappointed with my recent purchase of the denon 3800bdci. it was @ $80 more than the oppo. i thought a $2000 unit going for @ 1/4 of the price would be a steal

Be aware of what audio and video codecs the 83 will decode. You can find that info here: http://watershade.net/wmcclain/BDP-83-faq.html. Check the "media files" section.

I was surprised to find that the 83 cannot play .wav files, for example. Although if you burn .wav files to make an audio CD, it'll play that. Hopefully, it'll someday play .flac files as well.

cheers,
supervij
