Hi all,

I'm considering buying a used 2003 Axiom Grand Master 175 including a pair of M22's, pair of QS8's with stands, vp100 center, and ep175 sub.. The going price for it all is just under a grand which felt a tad steep to me for almost 10 years old.. They do look like they're in good condition and I'm going to demo them this weekend from the seller however I wanted to see if this is actually a good deal or if I should negotiate a bit with him (i don't want to come across as a low baller)..

The other consideration I had was picking up a pair of Paradigm Monitor Mini v.5's along with a CC290 v.5 center for $375.. Then go from there with purchasing a sub and two other L R fronts while pushing the mini's as surround backs in a 5.1..

Any thoughts or suggestions on the price or even going with the Paradigm set instead? This is for a medium sized room, mostly HT/bluray but occasional dedicated music listening..

Thank you!
dave

Well I sold my Axiom setup from 2007 V2s. Two pair of M2s, and a VP150 for $350, then I just ended up giving away my M22s (all black oak, mint). I have a EP175 V2 in a bedroom with powered soundbar and thats IMO all its really good for it doesn't do much for movies and doesn't have much below 35hrz.

If they are new V2s or V3s I would say $1k is a good deal. But for 2003 models I would look else were for something in the $1k range or negoitate down a few hundred dollars.

I myself would rather come off as a lowballer than to end up with some older use equipment and regret it later on that you paid too much.

For $1k I would look at some of the HSU Research speaker packages.

Hey, thanks for the response.. Yeah, I feeling it was a bit high myself, so I'll see what I can do about negotiating down.

It's interesting to hear your thoughts on the Axioms. It's funny because it seemed like everyone was raving about these all the time back in the day and now it appears people are very mixed about them - either loving them or feeling like they're just average anymore. Was it just how they handled the LFE or was it more?

Appreciate it,
dave

Axiom stuff hasn't changed for a long time. The competition? It has gotten better, has constantly improved, revises its products, offers better built speakers/subwoofers while at the same time keeping the prices at a certain competitive price point. The competition offers much better quality components and nicers finishes than what Axiom does. For example Aperion Grand towers are $1600 a pair and offer a very nice piano gloss, cast alloy baskets, dual fancier binding posts, free shipping both ways. Axioms M80 tower is $1500 but only comes in a basic black or cherry vinyl (nowhere near as nice as Aperion gloss) lower quality stamped drivers, just single binding posts. You can get the same options on the M80s as you can the Aperions but Axiom will charge you almost $900 extra for the piano gloss, $40 for a basic cheap dual binding posts and another $35 for cast baskets. Which brings the price to almost and extra $1,000 for the Axiom.

Same with the EP175 its almost $600 new but sound wise only compares to $200-350 subwoofers like Polk PSW110, Mirage S10, ect...

I just get the opinion that they are still riding the wave from 2003-2004 and feel their stuff is still just as good as the competition. When Axiom was the forum darling there wasn't any where near the level of competion there is today in 2012-2013. IMO they need to either keep their current line up but cut the prices and offer better standard options or do a totally revised lineup and really raise the bar.

This would be a great alternative and its brand new. I have in the new Pioneer speakers for review and nothing touches them for their price IMO.

SP-PK52FS - Andrew Jones Designed 5.1 Channel Speaker Package | Pioneer Electronics USA

You could go with the 5.0 system and upgrade to bigger subs, preferably two subs of course. Good luck.
