Buying a new subwoofer.

I am kind of new to this, but i am willing to pay up to £500 (around 1000$) for a subwoofer. After a bit of searching I have found some nice PA Systems (Yamaha MSR800W) and (Mackie SW1501). The problem is that these have a response frequency of 40 - 120 and I am not too sure how this will affect their performance in audio/video as most "Consumer" subwoofers have response frequencies similar to 36 - 150, can anyone explain this difference?

1st and foremost: PA subs are not meant to be used in the home. They are PA subs. The difference is: PA subs are about volume in an extremely large area, not about super low output. Think of it this way, If you have a dance club, most likely bass doesn't dip much below 40hz. In a home theater you will most likely have material in the 18Hz-25Hz range.

You should change your search to consumer/audiophile type sub-woofers. Check out HSU,SVS,Velodyne, Elemental Designs, PSB, Paradigm... the list and selection out there is impressive.

From my new research I found that the HSU VTF-3 MK3 seems like a nice subwoofer. My room is around 3000 cubic feet and I would prefer the loudest/deepest model I can get for £5XX pounds. I can not seem to find any dealer in the UK for HSU, also should I try a more powerful model of the same company or will this be enough?

EDIT:

I decided to buy the watt SVS 20-39 PC-Plus instead as it has some great reviews. Any comments before I buy it?

SVS/HSU make GREAT subwoofers. You really can not go wrong. I would love to have either, or better yet BOTH.

The SVS may be a little more bang for the buck. But both are worth every penny.

According to SVS, there is only one dealer for their products in the UK, Sub Sonic Sounds, and they dont have the Powered Cylinders anywhere on their site. I searched around and ended up on a site "av-sales.co.uk" that claims to have the exact same products but cheaper. The pricing is ridiculusly different in the UK. The PB12-Plus costs around 950$, that means it should be around £475 yet it is being sold for £900 (1600$) at the UK dealer.

What's the difference here?

GlocksRock, I was going to say Epik!:)

Yeah, you just can't go wrong with SVS, HSU, & Epik subwoofers.

I have a 3,000 cubic feet room. In terms of feeling the room with wall-shaking bass, even my old a little 10" NHT SW2P Subwoofer did a pretty good job. I think the biggest difference is getting tighter bass with bigger better subs.

I wish someone would buy the Epik Conquest and let us know all about it first hand.:D

The claim that the $1,600 Epik Conquest can produce twice as much bass as the $15,000 Velodyne DD 1812 and five times as much bass as the $8,000 Genelec Sub is mind-boggling. I just can't imagine that.

Aidis, if you can afford the PC-Plus, it would be an excellent performer. Many people also consider the 25-31 PCi an good performer as well. The addresses you posted don't work, so can't help there.

The Plus/2 shows for £895.
