Part of me has desired any RBH speaker since I saw the reviews here on the tk-5ct towers. This sub popped up in my local ads and I was having trouble gathering info to help me decide if a single 1010sen is worth purchaing for 500.
1)Little backgound: I am in the process of researching front L/R towers (most likely) and trying to build up a great music system and later work into HT. Room I have now is: W/L/H=20/15/14 ft. Basically I would get this sub first, not great idea but if its a steal at this price, might it be worth it?
2) I will need an amplifier since this thing is passive and will need a lot of juice. Will the price of this sub+amp (ball park I saw HTD has a 500W amp ~$400) warrant spending that same money on a powered sub?
3) This thing is maybe not best suited for my room? Thoughts?
4) How would one build a music system around a sub? (supposing it did indeed match the room)
5) Is this thing really worth a DIY to make it powered? I feel trepidation about marring this nice looking sub, or worse altering the cabinet and causing unwanted vibrations or resonant sounds.

You can get a Harman Crown XLS1000 for $189 delivered from Amazon. It is 350W x 2Ch into 4 ohms, which I think is plenty for your room.

Or the XLS1500 for $265, which is 525W x 2Ch into 4 ohms.

The 1010 sub is like $1200 retail new. I can tell you that $500 is well below actual dealer cost.

I have 5 SX-T2/R towers, which means 5 of the 1010 subs. Each sub is powered by my ATI AT3005 amp, which is 450WPC into 4 ohms x 5Ch.

I wouldn't trade my SX-1010 for any other subs, except for the SX-1212 subs. :D

As far as powered vs passive, I would never go back to powered subs. It is unequivocally passive sub + external amps for me.
