I want to buy a new receiver this weekend.
My goals are improved sound, full compatibility with my 4K tv., streaming etc.
speakers are B&W 603s3, 602s3.
Currently looking at Denon 3500 and Marantz 5013. According to what I have read, same parent company, Marantz maybe better sounding for music. That’s at a budget of ~$1000. There is an off chance I could grab last years model if I can locate one. I want new, not refurbished.

Given that criteria are there any obvious contenders I haven’t considered. Thank you for any input.

Also looked at a Yamaha integrated amp (I think it’s the 901) but that opens another can of worms.
Thanks for any input.
The question of Marantz sounding better for music than Denon is just hearsay in some audiophile groups. They sound equally neutral.

Personally, in your situation, I would opt for the Denon which you can get at very good discounts for previous year models. With Marantz, you won't get that kind of bargain.

See if BB will price match the Marantz 7012 for $999.

Stepping up to the 7012 wouldn't necessarily be a bad way to go. Yes it's 'more AVR' than you need, but it is supposed to be a good machine. That said, looking at the Denon 4400 would be a pretty good place to end up too!

I'd also disregard the nonsense about Marantz being better "for music". It's marketing. I'd also target a sale price rather than a specific weekend. Denon tends to have better value/price than Marantz but depends what you find. If you're not looking particularly for Audyssey as a REQ program then other major avr brands might also be a consideration (Yamaha, Onkyo/Integra/Pioneer).

I read a thread here about the Denon’s running hot. Do the Marantz have the same issue?

My Marantz SR7008 ran noticeably hotter than other AVRs I’ve had. It was fine most of the time at normal and moderate volumes, but when I turned it up a little it would get hot enough it was uncomfortable to touch.

Class AB amps will run hotter than a Class D. If heat is a concern you might try to target something with a Class D. I know Pioneer has a few.

Yamaha runs cool. I have the RXA2060
I’ve noticed the same with my RX-A3080. I just didn’t want to say so since I haven’t had it very long yet and haven’t had as many loud music/movie session with it.

I have an onkyo ~10yrs old that gets kinda hot. Active cooling does wonders, though.

All the brands have had heat issues in the hdmi age. Some have better resolved in particular models. Active cooling is easily added.

If the feature set and ergonomics of the machine suits you, don't let heat dissuade you. There are mony solutions. Among them, the one I chose is the AC Infinity Aircom T series: the T8 is a rear venting fan unit with digital display and is easy to use. Others, with room above the AVR, just use 1 or 2 PC fans placed on top of the AVR to help pull air through; a less expensive option. All depends on your needs. :)

Went to a store called Fry’s Electronics, authorized Denon dealer. I purchased the x3500. Their price was $999, they price matched Amazon for $649. They had about 15 of them in stock.
They had the 4400 for $1599, but they wouldn’t price match Amazon because it was from a third party seller.
At the end of the day they looked the same except 7 vs 9 channels.

Thank you all for your help!

I promised my wife that I would wait a weeek before I connect it just in case I see a better deal

Just made the decision to trade my Pb~1000 for 2 Pb 2000.

That is already a pretty good deal!
