Long time lurker, first time posting, but this is a fantasic audio forum.

I bought a PSB 5.1 HT system about 9 years ago including the Subsonic 2i 12" sub. About 2 weeks ago I started getting a buzzing/hum sound from the sub and noticed that if I unpluged the connection to the receiver the hum was still present. It got louder and lounder and then started blowing fuses, so I opened the plate amp up to see if was anything obvious, but all looks good (no burnt caps or loose wiring).
At this point should I buy an aftermarket plate amp from PE for about $120 or spend around $200 on a new sub and just throw out the PSB?

I dont know how much knowledge of electronics but if you have a multimeter that can test capacitors you could check to see if the filter capacitors have failed. They would likely be the biggest ones in there. You really have to desolder them to properly test. When those particular parts fail they will produce symptoms much like what you describe. They are also easy to find replacements for.

Did you try contacting PSB? They will know what's the best way to deal with the situation! Good luck! :)
