Buy a Tuner Or Receiver??

I have a Yamaha A-S500 Integrated Amp and a Yamaha CD-S500 - I'd like a tuner to listen to the radio also. At first I was just going to purchase a Yamaha T-S500 Tuner and call it good - but then I got to thinking that the Yamaha R-S300 Stereo Receiver is only $30.00 more. My question is: can the R-S300 be used as a dedicated tuner with my A-S500? Can it be used as a dedicated tuner while still utilizing all the functions of my A-S500 Amp?

R-S300

I would say yes. Take the md tape out of the R-S300 receiver and connect it to the input of the A-S500 amp. However, the dedicated tuner may have a better and quieter tuning section than the R-S300.

While you may be able to do what you ask you would have a component consuming a lot more power than just adding a tuner, a consideration. Also, a stand alone tuner may be of better quality; need to check into that option. Or, a better used tuner, one from the olden days of tuners? Yamaha had a pretty nice tuner many years ago that I used to have.

As others have noted, I’d expect a component tuner to be superior to what would be included in a receiver. Keep in mind that probably no more than 25% of the cost of the R-S300 is going to be tuner, and probably even less than that (I have no factually data on that, just my seat-of-the-pants guess). The rest of the money goes into the pre amp section, amplifiers, all the connections, etc. – none of which you have any use for.

Personally, I’d pass on the T-S500 and see if you can score a vintage Yamaha TX-950 tuner. I used to have one and it’s a fabulous piece, probably the best Yamaha ever made. It was lauded for its excellent sound quality and ability to pull in distant stations. They listed for $400 in 1990 – what is that, about $1000 today? – but sell under $100 on ebay these days.

Thanks Wayne, I was actually thinking about/looking at Vintage tuners on Ebay - they look cool and the price is less than the T-S500. I will look-up the Yamaha TX-950 tuner.... :)
