Busted out the turntable...

Brought it down from the attic. At first, the speed was a little off, but then it leveled out. TG it's direct drive. The Audio Technica stylus is in great shape - still had the protective cover on. It's been so long since I've heard the "snap, crackle, and pop" at the beginning of an album. (don't make fun of the material, it's the wife's from college) It really shows off the Xmax of the woofers. ;)

So, does it sound as good as you remember? I always thought the turntables sounded so good though, maybe I'll get mine back out and do some listening. But im sure that's just my memory playing tricks on me. I'm sure it must sound like crap compared to CD's and DVD's.

Now who would make fun of Great White? Certainly not those of us that were teens in the '80s and love 'hair metal'. :)

That album has some nice bass. I don't remember my towers sounding that good. Hmmm.

I got out the Great White cd from my BMG collection (now you can make fun), and a/b'd the sound. Amazingly, the lp was more dynamic. The highs were more crisp, and the bass hit harder. Now I didn't level match anything (mtrycraft), but then again, I would have thought the cd would have a higher s/n ratio. Everything was played in direct mode, tone controls flat.

I'm going to chalk it up to a better recording on the lp. There's no doubt the cd has more potential to sound better, but I'm wondering if the studios added too much noise reduction to flatten out cd playback. It does sound as good as I remember, but with the rice crispies added in. ;)

This is probably true. It seems like with all of this digital gear, and transfers, mixing has become a lost art. I'm sure more detail was lost from the master to the CD in this case, than was lost going to the LP. I remember, A/B tests I did with Dark Side of the Moon some years ago, the sound from the lp seemed more natural, as if the sound on the cd was forced. Well, this proves it, CD's suck. Thank you for the final and absolute word on this Buck.

I wouldn't say they suck. I will say a lot of whats out there isn't as good as it could be.

Think about all the music released since the lp. Millions of recordings done without ever having dreamt of putting it on vinyl. Don't forget all those lousy vinyl stampings from Ktel.

Whats scary is that recording studios must take into consideration what the media is being played on. Once they realize 90% of music is played through inferior Ipods, PC's, and car systems, they may decide to tweak the recordings in favor of those listening devices.

Ok, back away from the turntable and nobody will get hurt

We were supposed to cut our hair, burn (or hide) the albums and never admit to liking "hair band metal". We're approaching or in our 40's now.

Beside, it never sounded right unless you tweaked it with an equallizer :D
(I admit it, I'm a reformed hair metal head.)

BTW- I had to pull up some Great White mp3's while I wrote this......"Once Bitten Twice Shy"

I was more of a RATT guy myself. Still have "out of the cellar" on lp. Might have to break out the Radio Shack realistic linear tracking turntable that used to be hooked to the old boom box and give it a spin!

My favorite lp to flash back with is CheapTrick's "Dream Police".:)

Bun E. Carlos now there's a laid back cool drummer.

Oh and Buck, ktel, ronco...we all wanted them...I had "Funky Favorites" do you remember that from the 70's. It had all the kids songs on it...monster mash, itsy tiny winie yellow polka dott bikini... snoopy and the red barron...

some times I scare myself:eek:

SBF1,

I have Star Power from the mid 70's with the theme song from Star Wars.

Somewhere, I have an lp with Pac Man Fever, and a bunch of other arcade songs.

I had all of Ratts CD's, as well as Cheap Trick. Dream Police was a great song. How about Howard Stern's favorite "Surrender." That's a classic.

In the teen years, I was big into Genesis, Kiss, AC/DC, Yes, Idol, Cheap Trick, MSB, Donnie Iris, Ozzy, J Giles, and a lot of the beginnings of rap - Run DMC, Doug E Fresh, Sugar Hill Gang, GMF, 2 Live Crew, LL, Whodini, etc... Remember Breakin' 2 the movie, Electric Boogaloo? OMG, I'm really showing my age.

Had to add a great college drinking game. The Police song "Roxanne" - take a drink every time they say Roxanne. Almost as good as the hour of power and kings death.

Long live vinyl!

Great to see you crank up the ol' turntable, Buck! I still listen to mine all the time. I just inherited a Rek-O-Kut from my uncle that needs a little attention. I also got a Scott receiver from him. I plan on cleaning those up and using them some to really wax nostalgic.

I used to be a metal head myself. Something about that good ol' R & R. I am a little older, so I got into the late 60s and 70s stuff. Love GFR, Alice, Hendirx, Mountain, etc. Of course, everybody has to like Skynyrd. I know, they aren't exactly metal, but you have to like them, anyway. In fact, I just listened to their best-of this week.

As far as LPs sounding better than CDs, well, I mostly agree, but it's a persoanl choice. CDs are definately easier and have no personality (clicks and pops) but I still like vinyl. The different sound of vinyl may have alot to do with your cartriage/needle and it's frequency response whereas the digital crowd will say their medium is neutral. You hear it the way it was recorded. Meh, to each his own. It sure is still hard to play a turntable in the car or while jogging/biking, etc.

Do the right thing, Buck, and restore that turntable to it's rightful place at the top of the Hi-Fi heap!:D

Lp

Man I love my LPs. The Rega and Elyse cartridge just bring all the rich warm tones out and the definition is awesome. A good majority of my 1000+ collection are half speed masters and I keep all of my LPs in plastic sleeves and I keep them as clean as possible. It is really hard to beat the sound even with most CDs, and I have over 1500 of those. I continue to by LPs and really enjoy the hunt for good ones. My next upgrade as far as the LPs go is a MC cartidge and phono preamp. Hopefully this summer. Got to get some overtime in.
Damn ! I'm having a flash back. Later guys.

P.s.

I forgot, I just changed the Elyse out for the Clearaudio cartidge. It's awesome as well with even better soundstage and clarity. I like them both.

At no time did I say that you were a product of the 80's

Well, technically he is a PRODUCT of the 80's as he was born in that decade. One day, if he lives that long, he will turn 40 as well. Hope you look good in glasses, Sheep, if you don't alredy wear them:) You will need them about then to see the spaces between the songs on the records we all will to you.
