Business PJ rec? A gift.

Hey folks, my very close friend was recently burglarized over the holidays. Just about everything of value was stolen. She is an amazing artist (and thus has no money), and does not have insurance. Besides the irreplaceable art that was stolen, so were all of the gifts she bought, her two computers including backup drive, her BF's computer, one valuable book, her projector that aids her in certain artworks, a very nice digital camera, all of her jewelry, etc.

She's pretty bummed as she has a large showing to prepare for at a nice museum that desires to create a dedicated space for her.

So, I want to buy her a replacement PJ. Her dad already got her a new notebook computer.

I don't have a set budget, and I might even be able to procure donations from mutual friends. Something that is simply reliable and FWIW bulb costs might worry her. So perhaps a unit which has bulbs that are less expensive to replace.

She would use the PJ to help her map some scientific data points as she does a lot of work for scientists, textbooks, etc. This one is a huge example that cannot be appreciated on a computer screen; its larger than most PJ screens for instance. If you look very, very closely, there are brain waves in there, electrophysiological recordings of a brain wave pattern (theta). While it would be nice if she could also enjoy a movie once in a while with it, she probably cares less than I do about this!

She's a generous person, and deserves a replacement. She gave me this gift earlier this year. The glare does not do any justice. Just wanted to share. :)

Wow, I'm very sorry to hear about her troubles. That's really sad, especially the loss of art that I'm assuming was done by her. The theft of her time and creativity is horrible.

Best of luck to her, and to you in your quest. I wish that I could offer you good advice on a projector, but I know nothing about them.

EDIT: Just a thought - her parents might be able to claim the loss under their home owner's insurance (if they have any). When I was burglarized in college, I was still covered under my parents' policy.

Dell or NEC offer nice projectors for the business environment, bright and they throw a very nice picture.

That really sucks, my heart goes out to her. I can't imagine what that would be like for myself, and it must be 10x as hard being an artist and putting your soul on to canvas and having that taken from you.

Hopefully something good will come of this for her.

I don't know a thing about biz PJ's otherwise I'd happily chime in. :(

Thanks for the thoughts, fellas. I called both Projector People and AVS yesterday. The latter doesn't sell business PJs.

After talking about various models from Epson, Canon, etc, it dawned on me that I forgot that she needs DVI/HDMI. I've only done very, very, very little research and have yet to even google a couple of models the rep suggested.

NEC VT800 for $749 and perhaps the Optoma ET721 for $599. I think I can go as high as $500, so I shot out an email to see if I can get some donations. I have at least a couple of folks who will modestly contribute...

I'll let ya guys know. :) I'm trying to glean from the BF if she would care, in the slightest, in having an HT style PJ. Hm. He did mention that she really didn't care at all for her old Infocus, but doesn't know why. He spotted some used DLPs on ebay for $300, but I let him know that these moving parts can easily fail, and that after adding the cost of a new bulb, the final price is more similar than not. Thanks for reading.

Welp, looks like I gotta order very soon! I've learned the show starts beginning of February, and that she needs to get crackin', if only to get back to a sense of normalcy. I've also learned that all of her current tapes are standard mini-DV, and that the camcorder will be used as well as the computer.

I have no idea how mini-DV could narrow my choices, but I'll ask my PP rep tomorrow.
