picked up a 42" plasma pro display from a friend for free he didn't want to try to to deal with the image burned in the middle of the tv (a big fox news icon) tried running a few videos overnight and didn't really do too much, question is, is it permanently ruined? or is their anything else to try before i just trash it

Some have screen wipe option that runs a big white line back and forth, but if it is there all the time, it isn't going away.

I've always said that 24 hour cable news networks are a bad idea.

Mainly the burn-in problem arises when an image is left to display for too long & it becomes a ghost due to it. Example - In case of gaming on plasma television this burn-in or image retention occurs. Due to this your Tv might be giving off more external heat also.
So to tackle this issue you can restart your TV and always run a monitor refresher after every gaming session.
If your Tv is not showing you the right response so it would be better to buy a new one as there's no limit to television technologies that are available in the market at low to high price range. If you will spend your money or time on repairing this burn-in issue then it might cost you few dollars & it can happen that the Tv repeats the same issue. So to avoid investing any extra penny its better you start on deciding to buy a new LED or plasma.
If you want to try your luck I would suggest to have a chat with few TV repair guides before trashing it your free TV.

image can be seen even with the tv off, guessing its shot. but it was def worth to check it out since i didnt have to pay anything. (was just gonna use it as a second display in a man cave)

Well, if it was just a secondary display, then maybe you could set off to the side and have the other football games on it. So what if it has a ghost image, it was free and it's not the primary game. Really only to be watched during commercials on the main screen.

We have come a long way from the crappy images on old color tv sets using rabbit ears. Tell your guests you are using it and the ghost image as a way to remind them of how much tv technology has come along since color televisions were first sold.

I'm guessing your friend never switched the TV out of torch mode, either. I game on my plasma for hours at a time, sometimes all day. There's some IR but have not had any burn in. My brightness and contrast are set to reasonable levels (using Spears & Munsil disc).
