Building my system

Hello All:

I am new to this forum...

I am trying to expand my current system to make it a "real" home theatre/surround sound system. I have both a quality Onkyo receiver/amp and and a quality Denon DVD/CD player. I have a set of Bose 301s. That's it.

I do not want to spend alot of money on expensive additions, but realize I need to add something...

Do I need to add a center speaker? A subwoofer? How many satellite (rear channel) speakers? What kind? 201's? cubes?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Here are my suggestions.

1) Get rid of the Bose 301.
2) Depending on your budget, get a good 5.1 speaker set. If getting the complete speaker set at one time is not an option, get the Mains and the center channel speakers. Then add the subwoofer and surrounds at a later time.

Giving some more details like budget, room size, primary use of setup, any constraints etc. will help give a more informed recommendation.

I would look into a good sub for now, and then go out and audition as many speakers that you can (other than Bose). If you still like the 301's after hearing what else is out there, then keep them and buy a matching Bose center and surrounds.

I have a feeling that your 301's will be for sale as soon as you listen to some other speakers that will offer much more for your money. Whatever you do, make sure that all of your speakers are from the same manufacturer (sub is the only exception).

How large is the room that you're working with? Does it open up to other rooms (kitchen, dining room)? A larger room will need larger speakers and a larger sub, so take that into account.

Sounds like you need some speakers. and from one neophyte to another, let me help as I did a ton of research and listening and decided that I liked the Klipsch speakers the best.

Doesn't mean they're the best, I just liked them compared to Polk, KEF, Infinity, and Boston Acoustics.

I got mine on sale, and openbox deals on the following Klipsch models:

RB-25 (books)
RC-35 (center)
RW-10 (sub)

got it all for about a grand and am going to eventually get some satellites.

I've never had a theater setup, and am now hooked on the whole scene. Its amazing how better the viewing experience is, especially with a booming sub, and I almost want to go rewatch movies just to experiece them in all their glory.
