Hey everyone,
I am in the process of finishing my basement. Still a ways off so I have some time to save up for the home theater system I can be proud of. My basement is about 1100sq/ft and it is open. I would like to build a 7.2 surround sound system when I am finished. Can anyone recommend a good receiver? Looking to spend around 1000-1500 bucks. With such receiver would I need an amp? What kind of amp? I was currently looking at a Yamaha Rx 2080. But if there is something better within the price range above please let me know. Also what speakers would you recommend? Thank you for any input.

Do you have Speakers? Speakers are the most important component of the System. You match your Receiver to your Speakers, not your Speakers to your Receiver.
Denon or Marantz are the Brands I recommend

What is your speaker budget? Are you looking to do all in-walls? floor standing?

If you like Yamaha, wait until they drop their new AVR's. They should be out in the next few months. You'll be able to find one in your price range. Depending on what your speaker budget is, I would hold off on the amp. If you're going to drop some good money on the front three, I would suggest getting an amp to power those 3. If you are going to just get your avg speakers, then I would just use the AVR.

I would recommend going ahead with an Atmos installation. 5.2.2 at least. 7.2 is fine, but Ime and imo it’s worth it to move to Atmos. It also just makes more sense to invest in a current/future layout than a last generation one.

I highly recommend the Yamaha RX-A2080 and 3080. Both should be on sale thru 07/15, so talk to your dealers.

I would NOT get an external Amp with either one since both have plenty of power output.

A3080: about 300W x 2Ch into 4 ohms
A2080: about 260W x 2Ch into 4 ohms.

There are too many good speakers. RBH, KEF, PSB, NHT, Revel, Monitor Audio, Focal, Dynaudio, Canton, and many more.
