Buggy update of Mozilla Firefox yesterday.

Seriously, I have no life.
Firefox did an update yesterday and Firefox failed to launch correctly immediately after the update I uninstalled and reinstalled it three times and did multiple reboots to no avail. I also tried the fix for Ffirefox. No help. The program was unresponsive on start up and sometimes locked the computer. This started immediately after the automatic Firefox update was downloaded.

On launching Firefox there was a blank page and top left it said connecting, but it hung up there. The only icon or tab responsive was the close tab and when clicked, it would say Firefox is unresponsive. On clicking "end now", the screen came up to notify Microsoft about the problem.

I suspected I was not the only one with the problem, so I kept searching the Net. Last night some clever chap discovered the new update can leave Firefox exe running. If that happens, it behaves just like mine did.

The solution is to hold down Ctrl and Shift and press escape, while you are on the stalled page. That brings up task manager and you find Firefox exe and stop it manually Then hey presto the page connects and you have Firefox open and working normally. It has worked normally since.

I'm posting this in case any other members encounter this problem with a Firefox update.

Also I would be very interested if knowledgeable IT members could give me tips on how I could have isolated the problem. I was thinking that the update and new download was somehow corrupted.

Obviously I did not have the skills to run this down in a didactic manner. If I had them I would have not wasted so much time yesterday.

I had quite a correspondence with the Firefox Bugzilla people and they were completely obtuse and useless. I did post the solution for them on their site.

I'm glad I posted then. As a matter if interest what you you running on your wife's laptop?

I'm running XP Pro with Microsoft Security essentials. The computer is a Dell Latitude 6500.

Interestingly they have not sent the update through to my Audio workstation. It is running the same XP and MES on a computer I purpose built for audio recording, editing, post production and CD mastering.

I had to restart my computer a couple of times. The first time because FF was still running blah blah, that brought up the blue screen of death blah blah. The next restart was business as usual. I thought it was because I went to some site that I saw Doug had been to called i-am-bored.com so thanks for clearing that up.

Doug, sorry I thought ill of you. :)

what version of FF are you all running? Latest stable is 9.0.1

However I still highly prefer Google Chrome - I think it's faster and integrated Flash support helps to fix some issues, but Chrome has better update engine.

My IT guy at work told me that Firefox is getting fat and slow. Not bad but not great. He recommends Google Chrome also.

At about 7-8 pm yesterday my laptop (HP w/Windows7 & Firefox) started acting up. Some pages would load and some would just hang there half loaded. All better this morning though.

Yes, it is version 9.0.1

One of the reasons I posted though was to get some tips on the differential diagnosis of the problem when it occurred, and the logical sequence of steps to isolate the problem. Any free post grad education would be appreciated.

I have not used firefox in years. The move to Chrome was well worth it. My experiences have even told me Internet Explorer is preferable to Firefox.

Trouble such issues is possible, but pretty complicated - in this example is article on how to Mark fought and won the battle with Security essentials to get installed - if you are still interested in following this rabbit hole - feel free, I'll try to help you as I can, but I don't have a 1/20 of knowledge of Mark Russinovich
I strongly recommend reading more articles on his blog:
Mark's Blog - Site Home - TechNet Blogs

The minimum of tools you'd need is a)Process explorer b)Process monitor
Sysinternals Process Utilities

Good luck to you

p.s: Or you could skip all this hassle and install Google chrome
p.s.s: Stuff like this they do not teach in any Post Grad schools
p.s.s.s: What I would do If I were you: CCleaner FF cache, Run FF w/o any plugins (firefox.exe -safe-mode) and disable all of them, enabling them back one by one and restart FF each time

Seriously, I have no life.
If my computers hang up, I usually look in the Task Manager to see what's hogging the processor. If I have closed Firefox, I end that task and it takes care of the problem. Ctrl+Shift+Esc would do the same thing but I like to see what's going on, especially with my older computer that just turned 12 today. It's as fast as a piece of wood but it still works.

So do I, but everything else was working fine. I guess in retrospect it was really dumb to not look in the Task Manager.
