Hi all, I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to audio so I hope you don't mind me posting here for advice.

I'm looking for a receiver that I can use to connect my computer to a set of speakers so that I can listen to music, play DVDs and also have surround sound for gaming. I have a pretty small budget compared to the likes of what I see being discussed here , and also because I live in New Zealand some of the brands you are familar with might not be available over here.

To be honest I don't really know much about what to look for as good minimum features in a receiver Here's an example of the type of receiver I've been looking at. I haven't yet decided on any speakers but I was thinking of getting some type of floorstanding ones for fronts and then smaller ones for the rear. What do you think about the receiver I linked to, would it be a good option for me? I think that receiver is in the approximate price range that I would be looking at, so if you have any suggestions of similar products that may be better please feel free to mention them :)

Also, I had been told that in order to have surround sound in gaming you need to connect the analogue outputs from the soundcard/mobo to the receiver and that you can't use S/PDIF for this. Is that correct? From what I understand the S/PDIF connection can't be used because the audio channels aren't encoded into Dolby Digital and apart from the nForce2 APU no sound cards can perform the encoding.

Thanks for the help, and if you need any help regarding computing / computer hardware stop by at the forums of the techreport! (another great helpful community)

**Edit: Whoops, Fixed the link

The majority of Best Buy / Circuit City stuff is exactly what you are looking at for an A/V receiver. I would suggest that you may want to check out a complete home theater in a box (HTIB) system. The manufacturer will give you a bit of a price break and you will likely have speakers that are exactly appropriate for the receiver you are purchasing.

Now, on the PC side of things... Okay, I can't really help. I was going to use the SPDIF connection from the SBLive card I have to my receiver as well as use a single set of analog connections to my distributed audio. I'm not looking for surround though.
