I was looking into purchasing (for the first time), horn loaded theater speakers, but on a budget.

Is there anything out there, new or used, that provides a value similar to the Cragsub Pro 10s? Here is what he says. "We can get 117 dB outdoors (one meter) with a good 100 watt per channel receiver, and we still have about another 6 dB of available output should one want to use a higher powered amp.

At 4 meters OUTDOORS, a good 100 watt per channel receiver will deliver 105 dB from EACH speaker. Indoors, it will be much more powerful."

My range is $350 per speaker, and basically, im just looking for a speaker that would sound ok for music (mostly listen to rock, rap), go loud for movies without sounding compresses, and generally sound similar to a good movie theater.

Is there anything out there? Any old hidden gems from Altec Lansing or JBL? Im thinking there is not much that would compete for the price of the Pro 10s.

Thanks!

I am in the process of building a set of EconoWaveGuide Deluxes...but the standard version can be had for about $380 per pair if you want to DIY...

If you don't want to DIY...the entire thing...get an old JBL or something and just replace the drivers and add a horn...like the original intent of the Ewaveguide design! Good Luck!

Can't post links yet but check out AudioKarma.org under the speaker section...great thread.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do.

Are you planning on using a fully horn loaded system? If so that will be very expensive, and take up a lot of real estate. Most of these systems are enthusiast designs and take a lot of skill to build.

Altec, Klipsch and JBL had fully horn loaded systems for the cinema in times past.

Altec have reintroduced a version of their Voice of the Theater speaker system the A7.

If you want the classic movie theater sound, then that is what it takes.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys! Basically, im just looking for a higher efficiency speakers for my LR, (Center later), that have similar sound/output of cinema speakers.

Are there any choices like the PRO-10s that use a nice 10" sub and decent compression driver?

Hola Captian-

Used Heritage series Klipsch speakers (Chorus/Forte/Quartet/Heresy) prices are smack dab at what you're looking to spend, and would meet all your requirements. They seem to be fairly abundant, in good condition for $200-$500/pair typically, and a good set will hold their value if you don't like 'em.

I've personally auditioned some RF-83's against my old Forte II's, and greatly preferred the old Fortes to the new RF. Tight, dry, deep bass vs. thicker, heavier, just slightly less resolving bass with the RFs. The older Klipsch have a glorious midrange, greatly outclassing what the RFs could do. Just all around better, and certainly up to the task of music oriented listening. Its a shame actually, the new Klipsch pales in comparison to their heritage/vintage stuff. For your intended use, Captian, they could be worth a look.

Just watch the volume setting...the setup you are looking to create is a cochlea shredding machine, fair warning. And good luck!
