Budget 5.1 system

I need help picking out a budget 5.1 speaker system. I'm in college and my roomate is paying for it and he only wants to spend $300-$400. They will be paired with an HK avr-635 so it should have no problems powering anything in that range. They will be primarily used for movies and video games, but also music (rock and hip hop /rap). So far these are some setups I am considering. I've oly heard the Primus's in person but the other setups seem to have good support also.

P.S. I know many will say just start with a 2.1 setup and upgrade later for this price range, which I agree with, but he really wants 5.1 and since he is paying for it I guess thats what we'll get

Tell your friend to sign up so we can tell him directly. Some of the DSPs should make 2 speakers sound decent enough until rears can be added.

BTW, I recommend Onix X-LS speakers for fronts. How big is the room?

probably anything you're going to get in that price range will sound like computer speakers and not much better. even getting 2.1 in that price range while expecting decent sound is difficult. others might have some advice, but that's just my opinion- just save up a couple more months and buy a decent 2.1 system.

Haven't heard them, but I like the idea of the Hsu Ventriloquist VT-12 system for you because as college students I figure you would like strong bass and any of the Hsu subs fill that bill.

Speaker options

With a good receiver like the HK, he desirves some decent speakers. I would also recommend the Onix X-LS. The new floorstanders will be out soon and for $300, they might play low enough to do without a sub for a while.

At these prices you may be able to spring for the 250 floor standers, c25 center, 140 surrounds and a PS-8 or PS-10 sub.
