I saw Bruno over the weekend. I've always been a fan of Da Ali G, I even watched it back when it was only on British television.
Of his three characters, I liked them in the order of Da Ali G (best), Bruno and then Borat.
But his format for the TV show, from its original British broadcasts to the partially transfer to HBO (a lot of the skits were redone in American context), was simply a lot funnier than the movies are. I think the main reason for this, is he can't fool people anymore because of his worldwide success.
On the TV show, he'd have people like Buzz Aldrin and Andy Rooney. It's obvious in the movie that he just can't fool too many people anymore, unless they are completely oblivious or in on it.
Because he couldn't rely on the humor of the fashion industry very much, he was then forced to make his own jokes and do more staging. This made for a few very funny scenes, but also a lot of awkward scenes. Where in the old Bruno bits, people were passionately speaking to him and were doing most of the work of setting themselves up for the joke.
These jokes, however, felt so staged and setup, with people in such bad positions.... like
mothers almost in tears trying to get their kids into show business, confused Christians trying to convert gay people straight
, made parts make me feel sad. On one hand, these people were nuts, on the other hand, I felt they were exploited.
Like while I do feel the idea of converting a gay guy into a straight guy is crazy, I do believe these Christian people honestly believed they were helping this guy. They felt they were doing /good/, if I believe they were or not... I have to give credit for good intentions. The guy wasn't sitting there saying that he was going to kill all the gays. He believes that through Jesus he can make a gay guy straight and that being straight is the correct way to be with his God. Okay, that isn't the way myself or my girlfriend view things, but, both of us were like 'well, the guy does believe he is trying to help, and, thats more than most people would do' Add a camera, and the guy thinks he is helping raise awareness probably, and on top of that has to deal with the fright of dealing with his own sexuality in front of a camera....
I wanted to laugh, but I couldn't help but just feel bad for some of these people.
That's not to say it was all bad. There were some very funny bits.
I'd say save it for a rental if you liked Borat. If you didn't like Borat, skip this.
