I'm new to the audio world and needed a few recommendation before I pull the trigger. I'm trying to stay under 1,500. The living room is 20x16 with 10 foot ceiling and an opening to the kitchen. I'll be sitting about 12ft away from the tv.

SPEAKERS: SP-PK52FS without SUB - 339.96 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IRH0QMA/ref=twister_B00OU4KU02?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

SUB: VTF-2 MK5 - 539.00

RECEIVER: Pioneer Elite VSX-LX301 7.2 - 449.99 http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/AV-Receivers/Elite+Receivers/VSX-LX301

That is a solid 2.1 sytem. With that subwoofer, you don't absolutely need tower speakers. You could get bookshelf speakers just as easily, but those are a good choice for affordable tower speakers.

The SP-PK52FS come in a 5.0 theater package. Will that make it a good/solid 5.1 system with the receiver and sub I picked? Are there better speakers for the price?

The Pioneer SP speakers will work fine with the AVR and subwoofer you have selected. They are all very proportionate to each other, so its a good bang-for-the-buck system. There are other good speakers for the price. The Sony Core series is supposed to be very good for the price. The Philharmonic AA speakers look to be a real bargain as well.
