if my player can send SACD audio through HDMI, it should be able to send the DVD-A right?
Not necessarily. SACD uses a one bit modulation scheme known as DSD (Direct Stream Digital) whereas DVD-A is PCM compressed using a scheme known as Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP).

I think it was HDMI 1.2 or so that added the capability for passing DVD-A as a bitstream but if your player doesn't support it, you have to use the 5.1 analog outs.

MDS is right it is right about needing HDMI 1.2. For some reason I think I remember your receiver having HDMI 1.2 but I am not 100 percent. If I am remembering correctly it sounds like your dvd player doesn't have the capabilities. What are the models of your receiver and dvd player again so we can figure it out before jumping to any conclusions.

Denon AVR2307 (non CI ... I think this one has 1.1 IIRC)
Pioneer DV696
Pioneer DV600

I looked around. Can barely find anything on a non Ci 2307. Looks like that is your weak link though :(. Does give you an excuse to upgrade though since your dvd players don't have multichannel analog outs.

oh, both players have analog 5.1 outs ... I'm just too lazy to wire them :)

I think I'm gonna wait for the players to actually output HDMI 1.3 (DTS HD) before replacing the receiver :)

Weird, I looked at pics of the rear oline and didn't see them and they weren't mentioned in the specs. Voodoo, I say.

edit: Their connection table is weird. Shows a pic for 2-channel analog out but if you read the fine print it means its multi. That makes much more sense.

i tried the disc in the HT...

even with the HDMI 1.1 of the AVR2307 ...
the disc played with 5.1.

the left side of the denon display shows the number of channels from the source right? (I see 5.1) and then the left shows what the receiver is using to play the source. (I see 7.1)

but what I forgot to look at was the center part of the display ... did it show multi channel in? digital in?

note: I don't have analog outs from this player connected.

My receiver and speakers date to the late 90s. I ended up ordering a set of 6-channel analog cables from Blue Jeans for my Oppo 981. A 3-foot set cost me $95 which buys me some time to upgrade my receiver. As a bonus, I can listen to DTS now because my receiver can only do Dolby Digital and Pro Logic.

DVD-A only needs HDMI 1.1 to play, as you obviously found out. Here's a link to prove it if you like! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#HDMI_1.1. Enjoy your Hi-res music!
