I bought a new TV and used this and the fact that I was paying cash to barter for some equipment, here is what I got (both are open box but have full warranty):

Deno AVR1609 - $210.00
Energy Take Classic 5.1 Home Theatre speakers (5 speakers/sub) - $330.00

From price comparing to what I see online this was a good deal, at the point of sale the guy tried selling me about every wire under the sun and really blew my mind with the $70 surge protector.

So with walking out with just the reciever/speakers, what wires will I need?

I know I need some speaker wire but not sure what AWG, also know I need a couple HDMI cable to output to my TV/components. He was trying to sell me some rca looking cable for the subwoofer.

I know google is a good resource but I am a complete noob with home audio so any help would be apreciated. Also feedback on whether or not you think this was a good deal would be nice too.

Thanks!

P.S. I was eyeing a pioneer reciever and then a yamaha but he sold me on the Deno which I'd never heard of, is Deno that good compared to Pioneer/Yahama? I know it depends what product but just wondering over since I've never heard of them.

Sure it's a good buy

Haven't heard the Energy system myself, but I have read reviews. It's tough to imagine spending about $500 and getting better 5.1 sound than you did. Really.

I bought speaker wire from Parts Express. They carry all the wires you could need. 14 gauge should do you fine, assuming typical run lengths. Figure out how many total feet you need, and order accordingly. Yes you need a coax for the sub, and howwever many HDMI connections you want to make. Also, you might need an optical or coaxial digital audio cable. I'm not sure your receiver processes audio over HDMI.

Welcome!

That's a good budget system you have going there. For wires, you can check out monoprice.com Also, I don't think the 1609 does audio over HDMI so you might need optical or coax cables too.

Denon is an excellent brand. Their power ratings are typically honest and their receivers deliver more power compared to Yamaha and Pioneer with the same published ratings.

Thanks for the feedback, I had planned on using monoprice.

I am running the rear speakers about 15 ft from the unit and the left and rights about 5-6 ft, does that sound right?

I'm going to shop all the wiring tomorrow and post what I am getting.

Thanks again for all the feedback.

home depot and lowes both carry speaker wire as well, as does walmart and all the other names you would expect, I would look for 14 gauge as a good size, 12 gauge if you had bigger speakers or long runs.

As noted the longest I am going from the unit is about 15ft so should 14 guage suffice or should I go w/ the 12?

Even with this in mind its about $3.00 more for the 12 guage so should go with it anyway?

Okay here is what I am buying:

12AWG Enhanced Loud Oxygen-Free Copper SPEAKER WIRE Cable - 50ft - $11.12 - SPEAKERS
PREMIUM 2 RCA PLUG/2 RCA PLUG M/M 22AWG Cable - 3ft - getting 2 @ $2.55 ea - FOR TV
3FT OPTICAL Toslink Cable - getting 2 @ $1.59 ea - FOR PS3
25ft Coaxial Audio/Video RCA Cable M/M RG59U 75ohm $6.14 - FOR SUB

So two questions, is this the right stuff and am I missing anything?

And for the HDMI:

Professional 22AWG HDMI 1.3a Category 2 - these are like $25 a pop, do I need them?
Premium 24AWG HDMI 1.3a Male to Male Cables - these are $5 a pop, will they do?

I'm willing to shell out the extra if it is neccecary, but I don't want to pay for cables that my equipment doesn't even support, ya know?

Thanks!
