Bought an AV Receiver and still not really happy. Need help!!!

I bought an Sony STRDH-590 for Christmas because I thought it would help me to hear better when people talk. They appear to be talking normal but it sounds like they're whispering. Or when there's a gun fight or explosion I give myself a heart attack. Any suggestions on what I can do to solve this problem?
