Since nearly every picture I found of them shows with the grilles on and off, I presume they are like 99% of all other speakers and they just pop off.

+1 for what you are trying to do?

Those speakers have a grill "sock" like Definitive Technology speakers used to.

All you have to do is pop off the top cap, loosen the cord around the top of the cloth, and carefully pull the cloth down the speaker cabinet. To remove the cloth completely, you must also remove the bottom plate of the speaker.

I'm not sure of you can still get replacement cloth from Boston Acoustics or not, you may want to get a hold of their customer service to check.

Thanks all. I am trying to see if they can be used without the cover since it has accumulated multiple snags and has become unsightly. I thought a better look would be to remove them and go with a cover for the speakers. Has anyone ever tried to do this?

Contact Boston and see if they offer replacements. If you are handy, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to make your own covers though.

I contacted Boston about a replacement part and was told they no longer carry this item. :(
I did remove the cloth material and it revealed a very nice wood finish on all sides. I am in the process of staining the wood tops on these and will finish it off in polyurethane. I may leave the plastic covers off. I may stay with this look. The only thing I would like is an optional speaker cover.
Anyone have any ideas on building a cover for the speakers?

You gotta build your own frame, but the material is available
