Boston Subwoofer Repair

Quite a few years ago, I purchased a Boston VR2000 sub. It has started to exhibit a hum sound when the power is on. It happens when it's plugged into eletrical power even with LFE cable unplugged.

I purchased the sub from NOW Audio Video in Greensboro, NC. A couple of years ago, they were purchased by Tweeter and are no longer a Boston dealer, and are therefore unable to fix it.

They recommended I tried Circuit City, which I did before the bankruptcy. Circuit City didn't think their repair center could work on it since it was so old. They suggested that I call Boston.

I called Boston. They don't do repairs on it, but they contract with some guy in Boise, ID. I'd have to ship it to him, which I'm not sure I want to pay to do until I figure out how expensive the problem is. It's a big, heavy sub, and will cost a ton to ship. They did tell me that a new amp for the sub is $650. $650 plus the price of shipping would easily be the cost of a new sub from somewhere like Hsu.

The, I tried calling the local pawn shop since they sometimes do work on music gear. They were unable to help as well.

I replaced the fuse for the heck of it and it didn't fix the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to where I should turn next? I'd love to get the thing fixed since it's such a great sub.

Replace the amp yourself.

Bash makes really good plate amps.

The amp would be the big piece on the back with the heatsink and not the part with with the ports and knobs?

The idea of doing it myself makes me a little nervous.
