Bose Lifestyle no HDMI hook-up, How to get sound from TV to Bose via Digital Optical

Hello, I've tried searching forums but have come up short:

I have a Bose Lifestyle (18 maybe? I can't find the number). It doesn't have HDMI hookups, but it does have Digital Optical In and Out.

My TV is a Sony Bravia XBR2. It has 2 HDMI hookups and for Audio Out it has your normal white/red and a Digital Out (Optical).

My question is..

Can I plug in my satellite receiver HDMI input to the TV and then do a Digital Out (Optical) from the TV to the Bose system in the Bose system's "Digital in" slot?

I've got it setup, but I must not have the right option selected.

Hope this makes sense.

Your satelite receiver should also have a digital audio output. You'll need to use that to feed the audio program to the Bose unit.

Okay thanks

I also meant to put the red white hookups work. I just want the digital to work. I've also got a blu ray player with hdmi hookup to the tv so I'm trying to hook up all video to tv and have the tv out audio to the bose via the digital out optical from tv to bose

Excellent response and quick!!

I'm pretty sure that TV's don't "pass through" digital audio. They just output digital audio from it's internal tuner.

Go direct from the source to the Bose. I hope you have enough inputs for your needs.

I didn't look specifically into your television, but the TVs that I've looked at (including the one that I own) will output digital audio from an HDMI source. However, with the exception of one model, every TV that I've seen will downconvert HDMI audio into two-channel stereo when outputting sound from the digital audio output. If having it converted to stereo doesn't bother you, then it's an option to route the audio through the TV.
