Since I like a cold one every now and again, I decided to upgrade my bar. The guys are here doing it now so I will post some "after" picturs before long.

Here are the "before" pictures:

Ok, that was fast. Well the contrast is more than I predicted so now I need thoughts on colors. I am thinking about maybe a wood stain on the shelves and a natural earth tone on the walls? The new granite is mainly black but has golds and browns in it.

Thoughts?

Some bottles of booze would make that bar much less boring.:D

No, no, no! Two taps attached to two kegerators underneath filled with some fantastic ale and served by hot twentysomethings of the female kind. :D

(Really, it's not meant as a slam that the bar is always going to be a boring thing.

Much better. I would do something with the shelves and walls as well.

How visible is this from your kitchen or another room that you want to match up?

There is an archway from the kitchen into this room, it sticks out about 8". We went with a total different color from the granite in the kitchen as we are looking for true seperation. We want to tie in the floors with a rich color and figure out something for the shelves.

Cool. Are you going to put anything below the bar like a fridge or wine cooler? I think I would go for like a mini wine cellar look. With that Arch entry and using darker colors in the room with a pendant light from the ceiling and use like a distressed pine shelf's and deep tones.

Are you thinking browns or more a darker terra cotta because of the texture of the walls?

We are looking at wine coolers and will either put one under the bar or do a build in right on the other side of the arch to tie the two room together a tad.

We have already ordered a new light fixture and it should be here tomorrow.

How would you do the shelfs? I dont want to remove what there as I have no handyman skills outside of AV. They are just painted white, could I just sand them and do some type of wood looking paint? You can't see any grain on them right now.

Will probably go with a darker terra cotta but she wants me to slow down and let her think about the colors after her brother gets a little better. I was trying to get everything done before family gets here for Thanksgiving.

Hey Dawg,

With out seeing the surrounding areas it is hard to suggest much but when I look at the pictures I keep thinking bar...you know old school bar meets new school living. How do you think mid/dark stained wood shelves with just plain mirror up the back wall only. (think old city tavern) Then paint the side walls an accent color of some sort maybe...

...I need to go was the metro-sexual off of me now.

I don't think the mirror would be what we are looking for.

Here is a better look of the layout walking in from the kitchen. We are planning to stain the kitchen cabinets darker so keep that in mind.

I have no clue how to do the shelves with out making new...

Mirror can be done tastefully but is very easy to make tacky. like I said, I can't see what surrounds so I might say "no way" to the mirror idea.

How about removing the wood shelf tops ad replacing with Glass or more granite???

I don't have a clue...Listen to me "mirror / Glass" I normally wouldn't use either in my home and I'm bringing it up to you...:p:confused::p

What the heck wrap them in brushed stainless steel! Would look really cool in the right home and you could buy a wine cooler to match.

Good luck and I hope I'm not making this any harder than it needs to be.

Greg, my problem is that I'm the kind of guy that likes the wood work to match so I don't know if I could change the shelves with out changing all the wood work in the bar area.

I think your wife is right. Live with it for a while and some thing will make up your minds.

I will rest on it through Thanksgiving but have to fix the issue before my Jazz and Martini party on the 6th of Ded.

Just for kicking arounds ideas, what would it look like if I just painted the shelves the same color I end up painting the walls? There will be various drinking glasses covering them.

Probably not bad as long as the room isn't being painted too bold color.
