Bookshelf vs. Floorstanding?

These are a little pricey, but makes the point of towers and bookshelves that share key elements, except size.

I also have Boston VR 2's and love them. But I have heard bookshelfs that sounded good. I've also heard bookshelfs that sucked. John Garcia has some of the best bookshelfs I've ever heard, (they are custom-made DIY's though). It seems that as long as you get a good bookshelf that will play low enough, and integrate them with a good sub, they can be just as good as a tower.

In fact, when I bought my VR 2's, I was actually planning on buying bookshelfs to save space. But the manager at Magnolia kind of talked me out of it. Once you put a bookshelf speaker on a stand, you pretty much have the same footprint as a tower, so you're not really saving much space.

I own 20's as well and love them. They are in about a 3000 cubic room and I have no troubles listening to them quite loud. Are all your speakers set to "small" and crossed over at 80Hz? If not that could be a fly in the ointment.

My bookselfs sound better than your VR23...oh wait...that's only using my ears...maybe if I used your ears...oh wait...that's impossible...never mind...

Examples? I have heard (and in some cases owned) bookshelf speakers ranging from $200-$1500/pr from Athena, KRK, Infinity, B&W, Klipsch, Polk, Boston, and Pardigm among others. None hold a candle to my Boston VR2s ($800 MSRP) in any respect, and most are outperformed in terms of presence and dynamics even by the $250/pr Athena F1s (though they may excel in other areas.)
