Personally, I am happy with my Sony old BDP-S590.
The things that make it good for me:
1) Plays SACD's (doesn't matter unless you already have SACD's, it is a mostly dead format).
2) It is quiet (I briefly owned a Samsung unit that was great in many ways - very fast processing - but you could hear it running anytime the music got soft
).
3) Bonus - it streams Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, etc. essentially replacing the functions of a Roku or Amazon Fire stick!
My point is you don't have to go exotic audiophile to get solid performance. The whole point of the digital disc formats is to avoid the kind of problems that require an expensive player.
On the other hand, if you have the money, there are some beautiful players out there. My Sony is boring to ugly as far as making any visual statements goes.
