overall, do blu ray players upconvert better than receivers

Depends what your TV's native display format is. If it's 1080p and you're having the blu-ray push the 1080p signal then the blu-ray is. If the blu-ray is pushing the 1080p signal and your TV is 1080i/720p or something else then the TV is.

its a buddies future setup. he doenst want to spend the extra money on a receiver that upconverts if BR players do it better. but im guessing around $500-700 for a receiver.. maybe Onkyo.

depends on his display, like I said most displays to the best job.

I don't waste time with Receivers up-scaling (changing a 480i signal into a 1080p). What I do look for is up converting (changing the composite video from my Wii to HDMI for my TV).

I let my PS3 do its own scaling. Other than that, I leave it to the TV.
